Comments:	Bitis gabonica are no doubt one of the most stunningly-colored snakes in the world. First described by Dumeril, Bibron & Dumeril (1854) as Bitis gabonica, they spent some time in various other genera (e.g., Cerastes, Echidna, Urobelus), before finally being universally accepted members of the genus Bitis. The type locality is Gabon, and the type specimen is MNHN 4012. The former subspecies B. g. rhinoceros has been elevated to valid species, Bitis rhinoceros. Following Chippaux (2006), B. gabonica has two dark triangles below the eye, whereas B. rhinoceros possesses only one dark triangle behind the eye.
