Comments:	Crotalus adamanteus is one of the top predators in North America, and as such is easily one of the most impressive rattlesnake species in the world. It was named after the Greek word "adamant", meaning "one who is unconquerable". It occurs in upland dry pine forest, pine-palmetto flatwoods, sandhills, coastal maritime hammocks, long-leaf pine-turkey oak associations, grass-sedge bogs, swamp forest, sandy mixed woodlands, mesic hammocks, xeric hammocks, and salt marshes. It is found from North Carolina to Peninsular Florida, and west to extreme eastern Louisiana. It is also a fantastic swimmer, and specimens have been encountered more than 20 miles offshore in the Gulf of Mexico. Maximum sizes have long been the subject of round tables, with figures of 244 cm and 251.5 cm having been reported in the literature. I acquired this female as a proven breeder in early 2011. She is one of the largest specimens that I have seen: well over 6 ft in length, and strikes with the force of a heavy weight. I managed to breed this species twice before, and hope to repeat that success with this female in the near future.
