Reference Code: 0.0.1 CB11 Deinagkistrodon acutus
Species: Sharpnose Viper
Deinagkistrodon acutus
Sex: Unknown
Death Date: 12/15/2011
Comments: When I saw this '11 hatchling at a show in November 2011, I knew I was going to have a difficult time to resist. It was very dehydrated, and in desperate need of some TLC. According to the vendor, it was "already feeding - just not on rodents", which is usually code for "it may have taken a lizard or frog once". Having bred and raised quite a few of this species, I know that it often takes a while before they will take rodents on their own.

This specimen initially seemed to be doing much better. After a few force-feedings, it was much more active and visibly more alert, which was encouraging. Unfortunately, it suddenly declined, and then died within a couple of days. Its always upsetting to lose an animal, but this one was especially bothersome.

Ironically, Deinagkistrodon aren't closely related to any of the ones you mentioned (including Agkistrodon). Their closest relatives are actually Garthius chaseni and Tropidolaemus wagleri, which has been corroborated by multiple studies.

Kinda reminds me of Porthidium or Atropoides (and of course Akigstrodon). -p-

I'm glad you got it. It's adorable. I've been intrigued by these ever since you told me about them. I think it's insane that this animal's egg may have been laid a month ago! Ha! -p-

Same here, which is why I'm insanely jealous of your Langaha! :-)

Absolutely neat! I definitely have a thing for snakes with the nasal appendages! : )
