Reference Code: 1.0 LTC Agkistrodon c. "mokasen"
Species: Northern Copperhead
Agkistrodon contortrix mokasen
Sex: Male
Locale: Dismal Swamp, Suffolk, VA
Comments: Copperheads are one of my favorite species of North American snake: they are beautiful, highly variable, and have a large distribution range. Traditionally, there have been five subspecies recognized, some of which were considered to overlap/integrade. However, Guiher and Burbrink (2008) found that there are actually three phylogeographic lineages of copperheads, which do not correspond to the traditional subspecific division.

This specimen was wild-caught in the Dismal Swamp, Suffolk, VA in 2009. While it resembles the phenotype of the nominate form, the traditional subspecific taxonomy would render it Agkistrodon c. mokasen, based on the locality. However, according to Guiher and Burbrink (2008) it is simply a member of the eastern clade of A. contortrix.

Gifted to J&J.
