Comments:	Copperheads are one of my favorite species of North American snake: they are beautiful, highly variable, and have a large distribution range. Traditionally, there have been five subspecies recognized, some of which were considered to overlap/integrade. However, Guiher and Burbrink (2008) found that there are actually three phylogeographic lineages of copperheads, which do not correspond to the traditional subspecific division. This specimen was born in 2011, and stems from a lineage from the city of Rocky Mount, NC. According to the traditional subspecific taxonomy, specimens from that area (the coastal plain of NC) are A. c. contortrix or integrades with A. c. mokasen. To further complicate the matter, those animals may share either phenotype. According to Guiher and Burbrink (2008), that locality corresponds to the eastern clade within the Agkistrodon contortrix complex.
