iHerp Calendar Contest 2014!!!

Posted by Aaron Florian at 9/7/2013 1:32:58 PM

It’s that time again!

The iHerp Calendar 2014 submissions are now OPEN! We will be taking submissions until 9/30/2013, so if you haven’t taken your pic yet, there’s still plenty of time. And if you have, well, you can upload it here.

CONTEST GUIDELINES AND RULES
In addition to the standard rules, keep the following things in mind:

1.) A cell phone is NOT a camera.
Do not enter photos that were taken from a cell phone, they will NOT look good in print. It’s not a megapixel thing, it’s an optics and light thing. These are automatically disqualified

2.) Compose your shot, and pay attention to the WHOLE frame
A photo of the animal in a tub, with a bag of Fritos and a dirty sock in the background is not going to make it. Pay attention to the WHOLE picture. Animals in hands with up close and personal hairs are typically awful to look at. Animals photographed on carpet, on newspaper, are not shots that will be acceptable. Arboreals are great with a faded background (like the one in the banner), terrestrials on natural-ish substrate also good. Macro photos always fun. In-wild herpin’ photos tremendous. Also, if you are shooting up close, watch your depth of focus. Whatever your submitting, just make sure it’s a QUALITY shot all the way around. We’re looking for quality, composed photos, not just pictures.

3.) Photo Size And Orientation
Photos must be AT LEAST 1650 x 1276. No exceptions. Bigger = better. And make sure that the photo is landscape, similar to the ratio noted here (somewhere around 4:3)

4.) Watermarks and Sigs
NO watermark or sig on the photo. You will get credit on the photo in the calendar, I will be doing the (c) Your Name on all of them so they are consistent and pretty.

5.) ONE entry per person

6.) Not all entries will make the final voting. Last year, we had 40-50 entries. The voting for that would be far too much, so I will be picking the top 24 photos (or somewhere around there) to make it less cumbersome. Remember, this is a best of the best, and from last years pictures, I expect this year to be no different!

The photos that make it to voting will be voted on by iHerp users, and the top 11 photos will make it to the calendar. The 12th is reserved for me :)

Prizes will include fame, glory, and some other third thing.

Any questions, please post em here!

Good luck!!

Actually going to enter this one... Hmm... What to choose what to choose!

I really wish i took more pictures this year !   But since I don't have my old photo  taking landscape anymore .. and didnt want to set my neighbors at the townhouse off  I have been keeping my snakes on the down low .. I may have a few days to snap some shots  if I move into my new house on scedual ..

Aaron Florian,
Posted At: 9/8/2013 11:52:00 AM

Also, note that these must be LANDSCAPE, not portrait.

Michael ,

is paper towel landscape ?

George H. Wessel VII,

I'll try this. I'm buying a calendar regardless but I'll try this.

Pope of iHerp and Bread,
Posted At: 9/8/2013 8:01:26 PM

Obviously you're buying one. How else will you know when the CO trip is?

durante,
Posted At: 9/8/2013 9:53:49 PM

your a paper towl... (lol, paybak-had to do it)

Aaron Florian,
Posted At: 9/8/2013 10:28:55 PM

Paper towels, busy patterened blankets, hairy arms, and skulls all seem to be common contenders that don't fare too well in this.

Michael ,
Posted At: 9/8/2013 10:59:14 PM

some people have skulls in their landscapes !!

durante,
Posted At: 9/8/2013 10:59:24 PM

wonder if the dollar store will let me return these 35 plastic skulls without the receipt or atleast do a store credit so I can get some razors?

Aaron Florian,
Posted At: 9/8/2013 11:06:59 PM

6.) Not all entries will make the final voting. Last year, we had 40-50 entries. The voting for that would be far too much, so I will be picking the top 24 photos (or somewhere around there) to make it less cumbersome. Aaron Florian,

You can use that store credit to get some awesome birthday noisemakers, wax-like candles, or the elusive yet popular knockoff "Y-K Jelli"

Michael ,
Posted At: 9/8/2013 11:13:32 PM

Those pictures lack paper towels and skulls !!!!

Aaron Florian,
Posted At: 9/8/2013 11:14:17 PM

That's because I get first cut! :0

durante,
Posted At: 9/8/2013 11:26:49 PM

Last years photos are beautiful. The critters rock of course but the photos themselves are awesome too - great job to the winners! I'm doubtful if my skills & camera could even measure up on our best day.

Michael ,
Posted At: 9/8/2013 11:43:13 PM

My Picture was taken with $149  point and shoot !!

durante,
Posted At: 9/8/2013 11:49:35 PM

The Karma one? Thats a beautiful photo but I think any would be with that snake in it, amazing looking animal. Maybe I'll give it shot & see if I can snap a good one, worst case scenario I get to have fun playing with the snakes right.

Michael ,
Posted At: 9/9/2013 12:07:14 AM

Good lite and a zillion pictures  you have to get lucky !!

Ed ,
Posted At: 9/9/2013 8:53:30 AM

It's pretty clear hairy arms are prohibited, but what if I shave my arm and tatto it to make it look like a branch?   It's hard to get an indigo to sit still!

Aaron Florian,
Posted At: 9/9/2013 8:56:05 AM

sounds hot.

Emily Milton,
Posted At: 9/9/2013 10:13:31 AM

I want a calendar already!  But I don't own a camera :(

Someone come to my house and photograph my girls - thanks!

George H. Wessel VII,
Posted At: 9/9/2013 10:15:40 AM

And photograph her snakes also.

Aaron Florian,
Posted At: 9/9/2013 10:17:05 AM

DAMNIT ALL!

You can get the previous years here and here.

Emily Milton,

Master Gator,
Posted At: 9/9/2013 12:42:40 PM

Already got a picture ready...hopefully I win a spot on the calender this year!

Lauren ,

The leaves are starting to change, looks like I need to take some snakes up in the mountains soon for some photos. :)

Bethany Richendollar ,
Posted At: 9/9/2013 6:21:21 PM

When looking at the entry form, what is the difference between Title and Caption? Will both show to the viewers??

Aaron Florian,
Posted At: 9/9/2013 6:32:08 PM
Just title I think. I don't remember!

Dave Pierson,
Posted At: 9/10/2013 12:58:11 AM

I have had problerms in the past uploading larger files here, so I resize most of my pics, if I can't get the bigger file to upload, can I upload a resized pic, and in the event it is chosen, I could email the original sized file?

Master Gator,
Posted At: 9/11/2013 12:50:07 PM

I was worried my photo wasn't a large enough pixelation...but it ended up being 3.5x more than what was expected....big relief!

SapphireTigress,
Posted At: 9/11/2013 8:01:05 PM

Cant wait to vote this year! Iherp calendars will be a must for me from now on since I'm in love with the one I got for 2013!

Pope of iHerp and Bread,
Posted At: 9/11/2013 8:02:13 PM

If you all loved the 2013 calendar, you're welcome.

durante,

I finally had almost a free hour today. It was around 88 degrees out. I walked around the house & found what could be a cool but safe spot. I even made a decent attempt to figure out what all that stuff is next to the auto button on my camera. I slid my camera strap over my head with the swag a real photographer on a mission. I was pumped, this was going to happen, I could actually capture something great... if she wasn't shedding

sweet..cant wait to get one

I am having some problems submiting a picture. Do we add the Jpeg file or does it have to be in photobucket first?

Joe Farah,
Posted At: 9/16/2013 12:05:31 PM

picking just one to submit is hard, but i like it that way. i can see how allowing multiple submissions would result in way too many pics to sift through.  good luck everyone!

Pope of iHerp and Bread,
Posted At: 9/20/2013 3:59:13 PM

I submitted mine! It's just for you, Joe.

durante,
Posted At: 9/23/2013 12:30:28 AM

Aaron, I'm really trying hard to get a good shot but suck pretty bad. I did take a few & think i may have atleast one to enter but was wondering if I should send it in or wait until I take more if I have time, incase i get a better one. I know your picking the top 24 to vote on I just wasn't sure if we could sent more then 1 in for you to check prior?

PS- any tips to get good shots from anyone are appreciated. (besides telling me to wear a rat necklace)

Pope of iHerp and Bread,
Posted At: 9/25/2013 8:27:02 PM

5 more days, everyone!

SapphireTigress,
