Amphibians added to Lacey Act

Posted by Aaron Florian at 12/12/2010 11:14:40 AM

PLEASE TAKE 5 MINUTES TO RESPOND. LAST CALL IS THURSDAY, 12/16!

As everyone knows, our industry is constantly under attack. This time, it's amphibians with Chytrid fungus (Bd). Which effectively is a shotgun effect to all amphibians, as proof of them being Bd free would be a legal nightmare.

Now, please review some links here. Bd is the IBD or Paramyxo of the amphibian world it would seem in its ability to ravage collections.

And finally, you can
Submit Your Comment Here

Also, if you are on the docket page, you can checkbox the [X] Public Submissions (which is not defaulted) and read what other people have written. This may be a good guide to seeing what the pro- and con- are saying, and edit your comments accordingly.

BE POLITE.

BE RESPECTFUL.

And for heavens sake, SPELL CHECK.

Thanks iHerp.
Nobody does it better.

I know this seems like just another attack on our hobby and that it could be a real pain in the ass to have to prove amphibians are Bd free but do not dismiss the seriousness of the Chytrid fungus. It is one of the major contributors to amphibian decline second only to habitat destruction and climate change. There does need to be a way to reduce and control the spread of the fungus but I agree that a blanket ban is no solution and once again the politicians are swayed buy the opinions of those who propagate stories in the guise of environmental concern.

Here is my comment:

I am against this proposition.

Bd is a huge problem throughout wild amphibian populations.  However, adding amphibians that aren't proven free of Bd would effectively destroy the trade in high quality amphibians for private and zoological collections. Without hands on and close up experience with wildlife, the public will lack the interest to protect these amazing creatures.  Also, this effectively destroys the protection from complete extinction that is the captive bred trade in amphibians.   Bd testing large amounts of frogs every time that they are transported across state lines is extremely costly.

It would be much more effective to require all importers to treat all frogs that enter the US to rid them of any Bd.  This would be much less expensive and time consuming, while completely stopping Bd from entering the US via the pet trade.  Also, it would be advantageous to target genus that can carry Bd for long periods without effects such as Ceratophrys, and have wholesalers and breeders treat new stock of target genus for Bd.

It must be noted that most Bd cases are from international imports, not from breeders.  So by treating when they enter the US, this problem can be greatly reduced.  But requiring from state to state will destroy the trade and will be impossible to enforce.

+1 shell and +1 Joe.

The reason I put other links in here was to make people aware of Bd... don't get me wrong, it's a horrific disease, and not to be taken lightly.

However, you have to consider the source, the economic impact, and the best ways to minimize this threat. A blanket statement against the industry and the likely cleanest of the animals really does nothing to solve the problem.

Once again, this is proposed legislation that harms the good guys.
