About Rebecca
My Reptile Interests
I have been keeping reptiles for most of my life. My dad kept box turtles starting from a little before I was born, and we would catch & keep whatever local snakes we could find, starting when I was about 7. When I was about 12 years old, we branched out and discovered Reptile Swaps and the greater trade of captive bred reptiles! After that, we quickly built a collection of about 80-100 colubrids (foxes, corns, rats, kings, milks, gophers, bulls & a hoggie), with the odd sprinkling of Rosy Boas, a Rainbow Boa, and a Ball Python. Dad gave educational presentations to our area schools' science classes every year with our animals. We bred some gorgeous Everglades Ratsnakes (you can't find them so pretty anymore), and tried but never succeeded in breeding Fox Snakes (my Dad's favorite species). We also maintained a very efficient breeding colony of rats & mice. Dad passed away just before I turned 18 and I didn't get to keep any of the old collection. After a few scattered attempts over the intervening years, I started over from scratch in 2004.
Other Interests
I don't have enough time to pursue many of my interests anymore... but I have my snakes, who could ask for anything more? I get chatty when I get excited – apparently some find this offensive. It’s never meant that way. I’m interested in tons of random stuff: art, sewing, history, marksmanship, hunting – lots of outdoorsy things, fitness, lots of different animals, biology & evolution, I love riding horses, and I am very interested in livestock agriculture, especially meat production. I tried CrossFit for while, loved it, then had to stop because of a fantastic crunching sound in my knee. I look forward to getting that all sorted out again so I can get back to training!
Music
music is nice... I like some new stuff & some old stuff, and some really really old stuff; classical, classic rock, country, modern "alternative" rock, "new grass" (modernized blue grass), some new age, industrial/techno. I used to play b-flat "stick" clarinet & b-flat bass clarinet in highschool -- forever ago now. I miss it.
Movies
Tangled, The King's Speech, the Bourne trilogy, Lucky Number Slevin, Star Wars, Always, When Harry Met Sally, Fried Green Tomatoes, The Princess Bride, Sense & Sensibility, Pride & Prejudice (the version with Keira Knightley), Bridget Jones (both films), the Resident Evil series, The Missing, Atonement, 5th Element, Serenity, Band of Brothers series, Moonstruck, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Patriot, Zulu, The Last of the Mohicans, Braveheart, Tristan & Isolde, etc. Daniel Craig is my favorite James Bond. I do my best to stay away from TV, but when I give in, it's usually the History Channel, the Outdoor Channel, CSI (Las Vegas), HBO's True Blood, or Big Bang Theory.
Professional
I spin wrenches on war planes and make cool things with an industrial sewing machine.
Anything else?
I am a USMC veteran, a mom, and I graduated with my BS in Animal Sciences in December '08. ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... I have been a rather vocal member/advocate of USARK since 2008, and have volunteered for the organization multiple times at some of the larger shows. As of 2013, whatever happens concerning USARK, USHA, or PIJAC, I will continue to support the group(s) I feel is/are best to support our cause. Keep fighting the good fight! ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... Want a fun-to-read herp book? Mean and Lowly Things by Kate Jackson is a great non-fiction narrative of her experiences as a herpetologist doing field research in the African Congo. ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... Growing up with a love of snakes has definitely shaped my life. I am passionate about educating people (especially kids) about these animals -- not just their biology, but also responsible pet-keeping and husbandry.
