About Dylan Keife
My Reptile Interests
i primarily keep are Papuan/Irian Jaya Carpet Pythons (Morelia spilota harrisoni). There are only 3 very small disjunct populations of Carpet Pythons on the island of Papua New Guinea, each a good distance from the other. the animals represented in captivity today are from the single westernmost range, specifically a very small piece of it that crosses the border of West Papua, Ind. and New Guinea. these are among the smallest ranged and least studied pythons, and though it is repoted wild populations are "stable", its also well documented that the locals kill them on site. they are also being threatened by land destruction due to farming, and seem to gravitate towards those areas due to higher numbers of rodents that eat from the crops. the exportation of these snakes seems to have all but stopped, and with wild populations numbers in question, i feel these snakes are very rewarding to keep and breed in captivity for that reason itself. These snakes'are a smaller to medium sized snake, semi thin build, ranging from 4' to 6', with the rare 8' monsters (i DO have a VERY large 7' male!). they are also a very docile and easily handled snake as a majority, and i would say they are close to if not rivaling the ball python in temperment. they can be more cage aggresive, but once you have them out on the hook almost all seem to calm down, however neonates tend to be very nippy at first but quickly shift in nature. i dont use snake hooks with any of them but one female anymore. they are a more active python species, specifically males, and take advantage of any branches or climbing oppurtunities you give them. i have a small group right now of 1.3 animals. i do plan on adding several other different bloodlines to my varied genepool. im looking to have the most genetic diversity possible really, and would like to do my part in preserving pure lines of this awesome little python in captivity, as we dont really know how well the wild populations will hold out.
