My Reptile Interests
|

I prefer to keep lizards, though I also have a couple snakes. My favorite lizards are varanids, agamids, and iguanids. I currently have a small but diverse collection. Diversity is more important than quantity to me, and I'd rather have one individual from different species rather than many individuals of the same species. I have kept reptiles since I was a child. My family had a couple baby red-eared sliders and a small tortoise, but they all ran away since we often kept them in our backyard during the summer and did not keep them well-contained - yeah, we weren't very good herp keepers. I'd wanted a ball python for years but my mom is terrified of snakes, so instead I was given a bearded dragon for my 16th birthday. After that my herp-keeping hobby exploded and I've been addicted ever since. I occasionally go herping during the summers, but only if I'm in the right environment for it.

Other Interests

I've been playing the violin since I was 9, so I do that often. I'm currently the concertmaster in my university's orchestra, and I've played gigs for weddings, nursing homes, and fundraising events. I've also competed in competitions and was featured in an inauguration concert for my university's new president. I also enjoy watching movies - I have an extensive collection of DVDs, and I prefer to watch cheesy action movies and animated movies. I also play lots of video games: I have a Nintendo 64, Playstation 2, Nintendo DS, and PC, and some of my favorite games include: Lord of the Rings Online, Star Wars: The Old Republic, The Sims 3, Age of Empires 3, Pokemon, Ecco the Dolphin, Harvest Moon, and Zelda. I sometimes read when I get the chance, and my reading preferences are as diverse as Harry Potter, The Vampire Chronicles, Crime and Punishment, A Tale of Two Cities, Pride and Prejudice, Jurassic Park, The Hobbit, and informational books on herps and tarantulas. I also enjoy doing wildlife photography, and I sometimes put some of my favorite photos on deviantART. I speak some French, though I can read it much better. And I have the ability to draw, but I'm not usually in the mood to do art.

Music

I really like music from the Romantic Era, such as pieces by Dvorak, Beethoven, Elgar, Schubert, and Mendelssohn. Romantic music is also my favorite music to play on my violin. Some musicians who inspire me include: Jacqueline du Pre, Nathan Milstein, Itzhak Perlman, and Joshua Bell. My favorite modern composers are Joe Hisaishi, John Williams, Hans Zimmer, and Howard Shore.
As far as contemporary music goes, I usually listen to most types of rock, with some pop and electronic music as well. Some of my favorite bands are My Chemical Romance, 30 Seconds to Mars, The Killers, Three Days Grace, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sum 41, Metallica, Green Day, and Brand New.

I got a BA in biology with French and music minors from Transylvania University. I'm currently a graduate student in the University of Utah's Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology program. My emphases are animal behavior and physiology, and my thesis deals with crocodilian bioacoustics. I've also had internships at two zoos: Kentucky Reptile Zoo and Fort Worth Zoo (ectotherm department). I aspire to be a herpetologist and do more research on herp behavior and physiology. I would also like to spread awareness and education for herp conservation.
