My Reptile Interests
|
|
I've kept reptiles since I was 10. Thanks to my dad for indulging my curiosity and buying me a pair of lava swifts from a local grimy pet store. Those...were pretty cool. Then, after those died (hey, it was 1995, we had only the information the pet store gave us on husbandry - - - I did my best, damnit), I moved on to some desert crevice spiny lizards, which were SUPER cool. After THAT, I started getting into the geckos. My first gecko was a Tokay - - - great choice for a young, impressionable child. Ugh.
Once I entered high school, I was way too cool and way too busy to have a bunch of reptiles, and I'm pretty sure my Mom would've stabbed me if I had anything in the house outside of our family cat. That being said, it wasn't until college that I was able to start keeping herps again - and it was then that I established my colony of White's Tree Frogs (all of which are still living, thriving, and being fat and lazy today - 9 years and counting!)
Once I moved into my own place after graduation, it was game on. I've ALWAYS loved bearded dragons and leopard geckos, they're just the coolest, and eventually, I got hooked on the snakes. As for what I keep, just check "My Animals" - - - it's a variety, for sure. :-)
I used to field herp, until my Jack Russell Terrier made a habit of fishing Copperheads out of the brush and eating them. Now I'm afraid that there are Copperheads everywhere that want to kill me, so I pretty much stick to rescuing lost box turtles and confused black ratsnakes from the side of the road. I live in Raleigh. Options are minimal

Other Interests

I love my dogs and my cats, they're my lifeline. I spend a lot of time picking up slobbery tennis balls and throwing them, just to have them brought back to me, reloaded with slobber.
I bar hop, and enjoy art walks. (::cough:: hipster ::cough::) - traveling is a fun, but expensive. I also like alphabetizing my DVR queue. I'm a social butterfly. I've seen every episode of Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. Twice. Detective Stabler ::swooooooooon...::
Also, outside of my boyfriend, Kevin James is the man of my dreams. He can be the King of My Queen...sized bed.
I love to read. Favorites include: The Rules of Attraction, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, American Psycho, Pulp, Fight Club, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Awakening, I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell, Jitterbug Perfume, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Red Tent ... I'm all over the place.

I'm a classically trained violinist and cellist, but don't play nearly as often as I should anymore.
I still cry at least once a month when I realize Amy Winehouse is never coming back. I absolutely adored her, and the fact that her tragic and beautiful existence has been reduced to a source of public ridicule makes me sick.

Music is my second (VERY close second) love to critters.
I've even been known to dance like a moron at dubstep shows. SKRILLLLEXXXXXXXWOOOOOOOOOMWHAAAAAAAAMP. (that's my impression of dubstep, good?)

Movies

No favorites. I'll watch anything. I do really love American Psycho, though - both the book and the movie. And Say Anything, the John Cusack movie. I gave her my heart, she gave me a pen.
I like movies that scare the crap out of me, though it's only happened once or twice in my life, and each one of those instances was circumstantial.
I've never seen A Serbian Film. I don't intend to.

I'm a molecular biology clinical research coordinator by trade, but an animaphile by design. I also tech part time at a local animal hospital to keep myself sane. I prefer most dogs to most people. I'm planning on going to NC State in the next year or two to pursue my Ph.D in zoology - spread the love (and science) of these fabulous critters to the world. I'd love to teach herpetology in college, but that's just a dream for now. We'll see where this goes...
I'm a certified primatologist (non-human primates, naturally), so I'm super against them being kept as pets - - - so if you have one, don't tell me, you'll get lectured.
Also currently in the neonatal stages of a breeding project. Stay tuned.

I'm an Aquarius. I hail from New York (duh), but have relocated to Raleigh (voted the BEST CITY IN THE COUNTRY by Businessweek, THAAAANK you very much - - - that magazine must be run by hipsters). I hate raw onions and white condiments. I have a tattoo of the Cheshire Cat. I had chicken pox for the first time in May of 2012, and it was the worst week of my life. I suck at these things. Refrigerator.
