Comments: I wish I could say that Noelle is a happy, healthy baby snake that I got as a Christmas present.

Sadly, Noelle is a rescue, and there is something wrong with her. Not sure what yet... but right now I'm keeping her under observation. She doesn't seem to be in any distress or in any pain. Unfortunately the holiday season is making it very difficult for me to get her to a herp vet - between clinic hours and my work schedule, I probably won't be able to get her in until the beginning of January. Sadly, I don't think my normal local vet is experienced enough, so I'll have to travel to the actual herp vet in the state. The previous owner had taken her to a vet in town several times, and the vet just recommended mineral oil - when that didn't work, he said there just wasn't anything else he could do and that the snake should be fine. Grrr.

Her tail seems almost disproportionate and undersized (or at least just really skinny or something), and about 1.5 inches above her vent it looks like she either has a kink or a spinal injury. Between the kink/injury and the vent, she is very bloated. Her previous owner says that she's never defecated on her own, but eats and sheds just fine. He estimated that he'd had her for approximately 6 months. I don't know if the kink/injury is something she was born with, from him trying to help her defecate, or some other trauma. I might try giving him a call again to get more information on whether or not she had the deformity when he bought her, when the bloating started, etc.

She's also very stiff and possibly has another minor deformity - her back seems hunched about halfway down. It might just be her unwillingness to uncoil. We'll see.

I'm trying to determine if she has any sensation and/or blood flow in that area. The fact that her tail doesn't look like it's grown since she was a baby is troubling to me. I suspect that she's paralyzed from the deformity on down. The constipation could also be due to a lack of proper heating, so we'll see if now things will move on their own. If she's paralyzed by the vent and indeed cannot pass feces on her own, I'm guessing the only option will probably be euthanasia. We'll see how she does, and what the vet says.

*update 1/6/10* The vet in Conway put her on anti-biotics and said to try feeding her, then to continue monitoring her for any change. I fed her a f/t rat pup several days later, which she happily ate. Now we're just waiting to see if she can pass feces from the meal.

*update 1/18/10* After no feces, I took Noelle in to see the herp specialist vet in Sherwood. The antibiotics had had no affect on the swelling, so we immediately did x-rays. I wish I had just had gotten her an x-ray from the start. The x-ray showed that she'd had her spine fractured in three places (not recent) and the fractures were unable to heal properly. It appears that she was probably stepped on or had a heavy object dropped on her. As I feared, it was judged that she was paralyzed from the break down and could not pass feces or urates on her own. The vet said there was a slim chance that I could continue to manually help her pass feces and urates, but that there'd be a high risk of infection. She had started to form multiple cystic "bladders" in the swollen area. It was determined that she wouldn't have a good chance at survival or a quality of life. I was kindly given a few private moments to say goodbye, and then she was humanely euthanized.

Janna... how's this one doing? Have you had a chance to bring her to a vet yet?
