Installation Project: Snake Sculpture - Now for Sale!

Posted by Kylie (Gargoyle Queen Reptiles) at 4/18/2012 6:19:04 PM

***UPDATE:  We're needing to pull this project down soon and are now looking for a buyer!  We're asking $800 OBO, and can't ship.  If you're able to bring a big trailer and haul it yourself... Then that'll work for us.  Please keep in mind that the lines holding it up will be destroyed, so you will need another solution (re-tying lines, or something more creative).  Check out the faunaclassifieds ad for more info:  http://www.faunaclassifieds.com/forums/showthread.php?t=330292.   Please PM me, or email me at kylie@gargoylequeen.com.  Thanks!***

It's been a while since I've written up a blog, but I tend to save these for something worthwhile and interesting.  In addition to my major in Cellular and Molecular Biology, I have a minor in fine art.  An additional class I've elected to take this semester was a sculpture course with a 'difficult-to-please' instructor.  He had assigned us into groups of five for an installation project to complete in two class periods (and over spring break).  Well, needless to say, my group came up with an idea that sparked an intensive installation that required over 70 hours of work:  A giant python skeleton.  Now, I'm not talking realistic... But a dynamic, but figurative gesture to implicate the imagination with a suggestion of snake physiological references.

We chose a difficult place to display our project and combated obstacles such as height, project weight, light, and competition with a permanent painting.  An interesting twist we added which provided contrast against a white background was adding a 'skin' that the skeleton was crawling out of.  I've taken a few photos to show the progression and then the finished project, as I feel some of you here may be interested.

A few of these photos were taken with my iPhone, so are not the best.  I've posted the pictures in a way for you to see the progression of the piece leading into the finished result.

The attachment of the skull. Here you can see the underlying wire structure underneath the layers of maché.

This is the largest piece (the mid-section). Kameron and Kevin (two of my group members) were working on the randomization of skin peeling off the bones.

Our project took up so much space we had to be a little creative in our storage... We hoisted the entire project up into the rafters after each day's work, and lowered it down again to be worked on.

Here are shots as we installed the piece in the stairwell:

This is the first thing you see as you walk up the stairs.

We wanted lots of curves to induce dynamic movement.... This shot to the next makes it seem like it's moving!

Overall, we're very pleased with the end result.  I had a fantastic group that was willing to work, and we could not have pulled off such a great piece without all the work that went into it.  Looking through these pictures I realized how much cooler this looked in real life, but I hope you enjoyed nonetheless.

Cheers

Wow, a stickie!  Thanks for the comments everyone!  This was supposed to hang for two weeks... But we got such great feedback from everyone who saw it that we have not been told when to take it down yet.  Since the semester is ending next week... I'm going to assume we'll have to pull it down soon.

An unexpected side effect was a great interest and fascination in snakes within the art department as of late.  :)

Oh, and the professor wasn't fully convinced and wanted us to add more ribs because 'there were too few to qualify as a repetitive interest'.  He was planning on giving us all a B, but the dean convinced him otherwise.  We all got an A as a result.  It was a miracle, and the heavens shined down upon us as A's are unheard of in his class.

It looks great, I really like how you guys made it look with the skin coming off & the idea to connect through the different rooms is awesome.

That is truly a beautiful work of art. Congrats to your whole team. You totally deserved the "A".  Thanks for sharing this!!!

Really cool. That looks like it took quite a lot of effort.

Hey, there's a free holiday to Thailand if you want to put something like that up in our new house . . . Hint hint.

I sure hope you got an A+

Buzz and Jamie Burchill,

Wow I am impressed and as a biology professor I would totally give you an "A" - great job - I wish more of my students would show as much enthusiasm and dedication to their work as you did on this - again, great job!

PS - I did not get any art talent to go along with my major so I am jealous

I majored in art and I remember how difficult it was to please sculpture professors! They must feel left out from the rest of the art world somehow and try to make up for it by a stubborn desire to never hand out any grade above B+. ;) You all did a sensational job. I have seen many, many installation projects in my day, and I applaud your group for choosing to imitate a real object rather than going for pure abstraction (which, quite frankly, is a lot easier than representation). Awesome and thanks for sharing.
