Thinking about holding auctions for some of my claywork to benefit USARK... need input!

Posted by The Shammernator at 1/27/2012 1:11:48 PM

So as a lot of you already know I'm a polymer clay artist! If you didn't know. Surprise!!! I'm a polymer clay artist!! There! Now you know.

Anyways. So I've been thinking lately, how can I personally help fight all of this nonsense without just simply throwing money from our house savings at USARK (which my husband would simply not allow as we are looking to get one in a year!) And then I had an idea.... I could auction off some of my artwork and donate a portion of that!!!

I was thinking 50%. I'd love to do 100%, but that's really not feasible as these pieces take me HOURS of work and I still need to at least be reimbursed for my materials and precious time spent!I was just hoping for some input on a few things:

1.) is this a good idea?

2.) where should I hold the auction? My thought would be facebook...

3.) How do i ensure I have reached the maximum amount of people? obviously getting help on facebook, people sharing links would help... but I'm hoping that people will actually support me and it won't flunk. I really don't feel like giving my artwork away for chump change no matter how good the cause is. You can't really blame me either!

FYI, if you haven't SEEN any of my work, here are a couple examples... keep in mind these are NOT painted, this is all done by handworking colored clays only! This makes the work much more tedious.

OKAY OKAY I'll stop now. I can't help it I love to show off my work!!! BUT you guys get the idea. A lot of those that I just posted are favorites of mine... they are just examples, to give newbies an idea of what I do and are not indicative of what is or is not going up for auction! (I haven't thought that far yet!)

So what are your thoughts iHerpers? am I crazy? Or is this a good idea? Do you think people will go for this? Or will it be a waste of my time and resources?

Amazing idea, you should post on deviantart.com thousands of people could see your work then, and even buy it.

It's all so beautiful!

I think it's a great idea & I think it's perfectly acceptable to make sure you still get some of the proceeds, for material & time.

Those are AMAZING!

I will gladly spread the word on other forums that I'm on!

I think holding the auction on FB would be perfect, & we can just spread the word for you. :)

(Do you have a separate FB page for your work? That way your FB doesn't get overlaoded with a bunch of random people.)

I do have a separate account for my creations but it only has a tiny fraction of the friends that my main account does! I also have a facebook page, but I really don't use it as I HATE the FB page layout (hence, why I made a separate account). If you search for Coldblooded Creation, it should come up!

FYI if anyone wants to friend my artwork account... it's

I'm thinking, I wanna do this! I wanna get the ball rolling.

There is a place on facebook called Reptile Auctions

Also might not be a bad idea to see if Ben Siegal or Breeders Circle could at least get the word out for you since they also hold auctions.  Never know maybe they'll post the link to the auction or even hold one for you.

I think it's a great idea!!

Ben's a good guy... we've discussed my artwork on more than one occasion! He might be able to help me out!

I think it's an awesome idea! Why not eBay? You can take payments through paypal and post the links everywhere, and that will let you set a reserve price so nothing goes too cheaply.

eBay bothers me... when I had a seller account of ebay, even though i wasn't selling anything for months they would randomly take like $11 here, or a dollar there... just when they felt like it. I would get an email and be like FOR WHAT??!!! I couldn't figure out WHY they were taking random chunks of money so I killed the account! Now im afraid if I set one up the same thing will happen -.-

Greetings Shannon,

I've been racking my brains to give more as well. I do keep my USARK membership current and I just signed up for PIJAC.

You have an adorable new baby there, so give within your means.

On the other hand being a creative your time is valuable. You don't need an eBay store (although I have one that eats $15.95 per month doing nothing). You should just be able to sell as you wish without an eBay store with no problems.

These creatures you make are so amazing and have great potential to make some money. I used to mess with this clay and did some stuff...no paint...but not nearly as elaborate. Mostly salamanders, but they were so cool and maybe I can share them with you someday. However, having many friends who do crafts and such over the years, I think they all make one major mistake....Nothing cool for dudes?

Anywho, I say go crazy with design and have fun and spread awareness. Just not too crazy on big donations.

You never know when you might take an arrow to the knee...

Cheers!

I tried my hand at making some polymer clay jewelry. I made a pair of tentacle gauges for Nate. I see no reason why you couldn't make snake gauges. These were pretty simple, but if you do an image search for gauges you can see how fancy they can get. You can totally make those targetted for men!
