About Dawn Carrie
My Reptile Interests
I've kept snakes for about 25 years. I had some Phelsuma geckos for 5 or 6 years but decided dealing with feeder insects weren't my thing. I am currently growing my collection, which consists of a variety of North American hots (Crotalis, Sistrurus, and Agkistrodon), as well as a wide variety of colubrids. Most of my colubrids are New World, although I do have a few Asian rat snakes that I find attractive. I'm not into morphs, prefering attractive wild-type animals. There's really no rhyme or reason to the species I have...if I like them, I have some of them. It's really that simple! LOL I do field herp...I love looking for and finding animals in their native habitat. There's just something about rolling that log and finding that critter underneath...it's like Christmas!! I very occasionally collect an animal, but mostly just admire them and move on. I am a lousy photographer and don't have good equipment anyhow, so don't expect great photos from me. :) I will sometimes collect common species temporarily to use for presentations, then return them to where I found them.
Other Interests
My main passion outside of herps is endurance riding on my Arabian horses. Endurance riding consists of riding 50, 75, or 100 miles in one day (yes, one day!). It's a race, but some of us (me included) don't ride to win, we just ride to complete and earn lifetime mileage for ourselves and our horses. I spend a lot of time doing 12-20 mile rides on the forest to condition my horses. Of course, I'm always watching for snakes when I'm riding! LOL Although I live in Texas, I've been to California, Florida, Wisconsin, and everywhere in between going to endurance rides.

Professional
I'm a wildlife biologist, working for the U.S. Forest Service. Yes, I'm from the federal government and I'm here to help! No, seriously, most of my work is with the endangered Red-cockaded Woodpecker in East Texas. I also get to do lots of conservation education stuff, and usually managed to involve snakes in those activities somehow. I have a gentle gopher snake that is a regular at many of my talks, and for some events I'll catch some common local species such as a Texas rat snake, S. copperhead, cottonmouth, a water snake of some sort (the locals think all the dark water snakes they see are cottonmouths), etc. and take them along for show and tell, then release them back where I got them.
Anything else?
I love meeting new people and talking (in person, on line, whatever) herps. I'm looking forward to seeing what other folks are working with! Not at all interested in Ball Pythons...I'm watching the current fascination with the species and proliferation of morphs with amazement. But if it gets more people into herps, then that's cool. I can't say I like the trend that is starting with hybridizing species and subspecies. There are already concerns with finding purebred stock of some animals (thayeri, Sinaloan milks, etc.), and I just don't see how this fad of hybridizing can be good. I hope there will be plenty of breeders keeping pure lines, and I hope this hybridizing thing is just a fad that quickly fades.
