Animal Name: Lucky
Species: Gulf Coast Box Turtle
Terrapene carolina major
Sex: Male
Locale: Metairie, LA
Comments: JUNE 19, 2009 -- I got a call this morning from my local buddy, JD Barbara; someone had delivered him an injured box turtle with a near midline fracture that extends from just left of the nuchal scute down the dorsum to the lateral aspect of the carapace. The trauma is blunt, probably a car or lawnmower although the greatest degree of injury is right in the center of the shell. As hard as it is to imagine anyone deliberately striking a box turtle, the wound looks suspiciously like he may have been deliberately whapped with a golf club or something. That part of his story we'll never know...

JD's class at Christian Brothers School named the turtle "Lucky" (because he's lucky they found him). The turtle is an old male, easily 13 or more years old. The wound has become deeply necrotic and is currently crawling with maggots. JD, Becca and I will begin treating it this evening, and I've created this webpage so that everyone can keep up with Lucky’s treatment and progress. Wish him luck, and thanks for looking!

Keep up with Lucky's progress here:

Poor thing. People think just because they don't scream that they don't feel pain.

Poor guy. Brad, you have an amazing heart and he is lucky someone as compassionate as you has taken over his care. Good luck returning this fella to good health.

Congrats to you and JD's class, the duct tape makes him look like an elusive and rare silverbacked Louisiana Box Turtle! Hope all goes well!
