Animal Name: Joe Bob
Reference Code: RRC - Corn 2
Species: Common Corn Snake
Elaphe guttata guttata
Sex: Male
Morph: Normal
Death Date: 3/22/2010
Comments: Rescued on 3/17/10.

A friend of mine works in the bio lab at a local college. She invited me there to see her snake and probe it for her. Joe Bob was one of several reptiles owned by the college Biology Department. My friend told me he'd had a mass on his back since last summer, but none of the professors were doing anything about it. We took the snake out, at which point the mass started to ooze, so we tracked down a professor who was convinced to surrender the snake to me for immediate care.

I've got a vet appointment for him on Friday March 17, 2010. Unfortunately that's the earliest either of the reptile vets are available to see him.

I'll also be writing a letter to the head of the Biology department about the improper conditions in which all of their reptiles are being kept, with the suggestion that they either find the needed funding to update their set-ups or surrender the animals to me.

Update 3/19/10-
Had an unproductive visit with the vet today. Have to go back on Monday for an actual biopsy.

Update 3/22/10-
Joe Bob had a biopsy today. It was determined that the mass was indeed a tumor, and and because of its location and advanced state, unfortunately it is unremovable. The vet recommended, since Joe Bob's quality of life would be minimal at this point, that we opt for humane euthanasia.

Joe Bob, you are the sweetest thing. I wish things could have been better for you throughout the past 8 months.
