Q: help with shipping
Posted By:

So, im looking to ship a small part of my rep family to a dear friend in CA, but there one catch.

I have no idea how to ship...

Ive checked with shipyourreptiles.com, and its like 20 freakin bucks just for the box, and i dont want to charge my friend that extra 20 for the box too, its already like 40 some bucks for shipping, and thats nuts.  BTW, if im paying 20 for the box, and selling my snake for 20 dollars, there isnt a profit.

any ideas on shipping?

different sites?  different tehniques?  im not looking to cut corners, i want this baby to get there safe. any and all input would be appreciated.

this is my first experience with shipping, i suppose now is a good time to start before i start breeding, huh?

The only two options you have for (legally, safely) shipping your snakes are FedEx and UPS (through SYR). For FedEx, you have to get your own supplies and shipping often runs right around $50-60 (IME). You also have to be certified to ship live reptiles through FedEx. My suggestion would be to level with your CA friend. Tell her how much shipping will cost (box included). If she really wants the snake, she should be willing to pay the full costs.. Otherwise, you can put up with getting no profit from the sale, because you really don't have any other options in this situation. (Unless you sell locally instead or drive the snake down yourself...)

yeah, there really isn't a way around it... what are you shipping to need that box? they have kits that start at $12.50.

Ishy I dont mind paying shipping. When i bought Joker and HArley i paid for next day shipping. But its always good to ask questions, plus it shows you care for these animals.

Yeah, unfortunately it sometimes works that way.  Maybe figure in the cost of the box, the shipping, and go from there? I know a lot of the time, the shipping doubles the cost of the snake itself... just a part of the industry

*sigh* yea, that IS true that its part of the industry.  i wonder how ppl with venemous snakes do it since syr and ups dont deal with them.  shipyourvenemousreptiles.com?

I'm just curious.... $7.50 to ship a snake?? That sounds awfully cheap. Thats the rate for overnight shipping? I've paid anywhere from $35 to $60 to ship a crested gecko overnight. I do hope you are sending the animal overnight and not ground. I couldn't imagine an animal spending more than one night in a shipping box.

$7.50 to ship the shipping box to her, not the actual shipping of the snake

We ship venomous in wooden crates screwed shut through delta that's the only legal way just to answer that question.  As for an animal spending more than one night in a box they can actually spend a few days in a box depending on the conditions obviously when you import or export the animals are going to spend more than a day in the box they have to go through customs.  Plus on the off chance you live in the same state as the person you're shipping you can ship the animal ground and be ok because in the same state the package is guarenteed to show up next day anyways.

you make a good point.  hots arent a super big market are they? ive always known about venemous snakes, but ive only recently heard of people breeding, selling, and buying them. its interesting.  i personally, would never want one though.  im to much of a soft sissy.

I make my own shipping boxes.  Dumpster dive for appropriate sized boxes and pick up some 1/2'' or 3/4'' styrofoam from lowes ($7) which will make you tons of shipping boxes.

Shipyourreptiles.com is the cheapest and best method (IMO) to use. If you have ever received reptiles through the mail you can reuse boxes (that are still in good shape) or you could go to stores and ask if they have any used boxes. Usually they will give them to you for free. You can get the styrofoam from places like Lowe's for $7-12 usually for a bunch. Cut it and fit it in the box yourself and you're set. Of course heat packs... You can find them pretty cheap online. I personally have used the 24+hr packs from Dick's Sporting Goods with great success - they work just as well as the 40s in my experience. I might get bashed on the head for that one, but it works for ME and I have a lot of experience shipping these days. You can use pillow cases or tupperware sandwich containers (with holes poked in them) if you can't find any deli cups. I usually cut or crumple up newspaper for my boxes but styrofoam peanuts work great too.

Check out your local pet store, and ask them if they have any insulated boxes lying around. Fish stores are great for that.

it shouldn't be that hard to find supplies for shipping your snakes even at places like walmart, there are other things you can use. They have heat packs and cold packs too that are unmedicated and pretty much the same thing, Like Aaron said, petstores throw away insulated boxes alooot.  It's never cheap to ship reptiles.

You can put the snake in any kind of box if you insulate it well. Use lots of crumpled paper and put used styro p-nut on the outside of the paper. The thing is, if you chose not to ship it legally as in just put it in a box and ship it however and hope the animals gets there ok...well I worked for both UPS and the post office. Packages, especially ones that are small and light, do not get handled carefully no matter how they are labelled (unless specified live animal and even then its still a little iffy) We used to toss boxes, kick boxes drop them, spin them you name it. Every one is in a hurry and when it gets cold people get clumsy...big gloves, cold hands etc. Also this time of year the volume of mail seems to double and about three weeks before Christmas it quadruples or more so imagine a hectic place going into overdrive. Is this where you want your baby snake? It costs more but in the long run you are paying for the animals safety. Your best bet if price is the issue is either raise the snake till your next visit and bring it with you or simply advise your friend to buy locally.

Iashia, I can bring you a shipping box when I bring you the tanks in a few weeks.  I have a couple used boxes from crested geckos, that should be about the right size for a baby corn snake.  I have deli cups too, and heat packs.

No, venomous aren't a huge market really it's a pretty small cross section and in all honesty I'll be happy if it stays that way most people have no business owning hots.  The market has gotten a little bit bigger as of late but there's still mostly just a small number of people who are serious about it certainly not a way to get rich.

i just shipped out my very first thing today ( ebay items )  it wasnt all that bad.  i went in there all scared coz i had no idea what to do ( i love my small town, people can be so nice )  sparkle, that might just work. (pm later) and 103 for shipping is effin nuts, if that was a corn snake, i would say just go catch one, lol.  im glad venemous arent a big market too, i would be a nervous werck.  waht if it got shipped to the wrong address? lol disasterous!

They don't go to an address you have to pick them up at the airport unless you use a courier service from the airport.  I have heard a lot of stories of people illegally shippign venomous using ups and them gettign discovered at the UPS center usually animal control takes over then or a local exotics shelter or something along those lines.  Plus they're supposed to be clearly marked as venomous reptiles.  The exception to that would be things like mangrove snakes I have had those shipped to me using fed ex many times in the past.

I have no idea some people say you have to ship through delta some say it's ok to use fed ex I've received semi hots both ways in the past.  By the letter of fed ex regulations I'd say yeah they would frown upon it is it actually illegal like send you to butt rape prison?  No.
