Q: Leopard Gecko x African Fat-tail...

I have a SHTCT Leopard Gecko and my sister has recently acquired a very nice het for albino African Fat-Tail female. I've searched online for information on crossing these two species, but there isn't much to be said, other then some very vague warnings against hybridizing in general.

So my question is, has anyone succesfully crossed these two geckos? I know their genus' are different, but they are such similar geckos in so many ways I am curious whether or not breeding might still work out.

Again, this is mostly curiosity, but wow- I would love to breed them! They would throw some very interesting kids.
Thanks in advance :]

Though they are close in species all the info I have read indicates they can't even be housed together let alone breeding them. I have a fat tail as well as several leis. I don't think I would want to compromise either of their well being.

I've not yet heard of anyone making such a hybrid, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's been considered.

Have you bred Leos before?  If you haven't I would recommend getting a "same species" mate for either the Leo or the FT and see what breeding is like first before thinking about such a hybrid project.  I think it's very likely that would be a better experience for you earlier on.  Just a thought.

Leos are a lot more aggresive than fattys and I am pretty sure that even if they successfully bred the offspring would be sterile. taking genetics this term and learning all about this stuff. I would think that with all of the "big time" gecko breeders out there that this hybrid has been attempted and was not successful, hence all the don't do it with out the why don't you do it info on the web.

Fat Tails and Leos can't be hybridized. Though they look alike, things just don't work like that. Sorry...

I did some research on this subject before.   What I have found was there are people  that have actually gotten them to breed and have successfully laid eggs.  But all have died very quickly.  As to my knowledge there aren't any at all.  If there were I am sure that they would have huge problems.  If I find the documents I will gladly post them. Whether or not the article I read was true or false ....who knows?  But for myself I am against inter-breeding any species together.

Thanks for the information everyone! I guess hybridizing these two is a really bad idea, I would hate for the offspring to die or come out seriously impaired. I was just hoping it was possible.. oh well!

I would still love to see the documents on it though sideshowbob1, that would be awesome :]
