A snake's shed is going to be much longer than their actual length. I just have them crawl across the floor and try to mark when they have straightened out or use a string.

their skin is longer than them because it is all stretched out. I like to let them crawl up against a wall or something else that is straight. Some people let them crawl through tubes, and there is even an actual downloadable snake measurer program that uses a photo of your snake and a ruler in the same picture to calculate their length even when they are all curled up.
