Grounded GTP
|
|
I am taking care of a chondro for my fiance while he's away. I am familiar with how the animal is cared for as I have been caring for him for quite sometime now. The animal usually always eats a large mouse once a week (live, what he's used to). The pet store did not have any large mice when I went this last week, but had a small rat, my only other option was taking alot of pinkies. I took the smallest of the rats they had and just assumed that if it was too big for him he wouldn't eat it. He did downed the and I thought all was ok. I looked to see how much of a bump it made in his belly and it didn't appear to be very noticeable (the way he was laying didn't help me evaluate that too well, though), so I thought ok no worries. (I had already been thinking that he might be outgrowing the large mouse anyway.) I went to bed and woke up to find him laying under the papertowels in the bottom of his cage. I thought he was being silly as I've seen him on more than one occassion root under them but when I came home from work he was still there. I touched him a bit to evaluate responsiveness and his head came up quick looked at me and started to move in a territorial way toward me. At that point I closed the cage and let him be. This morning I woke up to find him under the papertowels still, this time he needed a little rousing to get a response out of him (could be he was asleep and needed a second to gather his faculties), I misted him down extra this morning to where it puddled all around where he was laying. I moved his water bowl closer to him to make it easier for him to drink if he's not feeling well, and removed half of the paper towels to keep them from absorbing the extra water where he was laying.
The animal is about 3 1/2 yrs old, with no known problems, he poops regularly, usually runs his cage at night, drinks from his water bowl, and has never refused a meal. The temps are kept somewhere between 85-89 during the day, usually the night drops to about 75-80, but lately outside night temps are in the 50-60's and I have no heat in my house so the lamps have stayed on (I live where it's warm about 99% of the year). I made the mistake of not turning them on one night not knowing we had a cold front come through in the night, the cage temp dropped to 65 when i woke up the next morning.
Should I take him to a vet? I'm sorry this is so long, but I wanted to include as much detail as I could. Any advise would be helpful. I've read where some people have used water as a substrate to super saturate the animal until it's pooped. Is this recommended? Thanks!
By the way. I don't have a way to upload photos right now, I will try to work on that issue, but in the meantime this is the situation.

I have a chondro right at this moment who is hiding under paper towels.Grounded chondros are nothing to stress over as long as everything else seems fine.My female Biak always grounds herself after I clean her cage and when shes about ready to shed.
65 isnt a real danger for one night.....shell be fine.Ive had heat go wacko for 3 nights in a row and got as low as 65.As long as proper heat has been restored your fine.check her shed records or talk with your bf and see when her last shed was.Chances are shes in shed or just being a chondro

89 is too hot IME. keep the temp constant if you can with a night bulb or ceramic (although they dry out the cage).
Vet trip sounds unnecessary.

I agree with what's been said. I keep constant temps, althought currently doing night drop as breeding my pair now. My female always grounds herselve at shed time, I know if she's grounded a shed's coming, then she's back up. My male seems to just like to hide sometimes then he's back out! I know it's scary but I think you're fine. Just double check everything.

also to note -- if your temps get hot during the day, and a lamp is overhead, they will see the ground for cooler temps -- instinctively.
because as good as they are with their feeding heat receptors going after my hand instead of prey, they suck at knowing it's hotter on the ground when there's belly heat.

Hi everyone,
Thank you for responding. some additional notes to this are right now we've hit a "cold spell" if you will, and temps in the cage has been a constant 85 whenever I get to check. there are no monitoring devices in the cage, although I'm tempted to get a few to take care of all that for me.
The animal pooped last night. On the recommendation from some others I had contacted as well, I removed the paper towels completely and put some water in the bottom of his cage to use as substrate for hydration purposes, and well lets just say it worked, lol. I came home to a large messy poop session., and he was on the perches last night. I removed the snake and thoroughly cleaned the cage, and put him back in with papertowel substrate. I went to bed with him on the perch but woke up to find him again on the ground. I'm hoping he's passing it ok.
One other question I have, is that it seems like this snake does A LOT of pooping! I'm cleaning his cage every few days because he's pooped! I've had other snakes, and have had other GTPs that NEVER pooped as much as he did, lol.

Every few days for a chondro as old as yours seems extreme. You mentioned that this animal defacated regularly, every few days for a 3.5 yr old isnt regular.Someone with more experience will have to opine on this.I would check with more experienced keepers on www.moreliaviridis.com ?..

I agree with Aaron. If the temp gets too hot, my GTP's also ground. Every time they have, this has been the problem.

I dont have any heating. In Thailand it is usually around 28-30 deg C where my GTP's are with no problem. However, at the moment we have had 3 months of extremely cold weather (down to 10 deg here the other night) which is the coldest & longest for 30 years, so at the moment they are all under 100 watt lights in the rooms, trying to keep the rooms warm. Had a few snakes with respiratory problems and a couple have died. Not a good season here . You cannot even buy a heater in Thailand!

Many thanks for such a fast responce to my question, I'm new here but I have kept my babies for some time now. Always interesting to know from other's how they manage there collections other than reading a book on the subject. Best books I have are by Greg Maxwell The complete Chondro

Of course, I have that book too. Fantastic reference book. But you can't beat the help from iHerp! The community has been invaluable to me and has saved some of my snakes over the years. I love iHerp!
