Help with homework-inclusion body disease (IBD)
|
|
Ok herpers, here is a scary one…inclusion body disease (IBD). No I am not having any problems with it in my collection. I am going to school to be a vet tech and we have to write a research paper on a disease related to our field. I am planning on going into exotics/reptiles so what better disease to write about than IBD. So if anyone knows of a good article about IBD please pass it on. Thanks, Cas

There was a member of this site who had one hell of a time with IBD, and it led to links and articles out the wazoo. I just cant remember her name. Aaron might be able to help you out with this.

look for anything you can get written by Elliot Jacobson. this is a veterinary researcher in Florida who's really the leading IBD guy in the States. he did an article in Reptiles last year about IBD (aside from several scientific journal publications).
when there was a small outbreak in Seattle a couple of years ago, we (pnwhs) contacted him for advice about how to handle it. he was very forthcoming. he also gave me some excellent info about crypto a few months ago, that I pared down into a newsletter article for our group.
really, Cas, if this is for vet tech school, I'd go to pubmed and get the research papers. nothing like the source...

Nate, you may be thinking of Cheryl Todd's fight with paramyxovirus, but there are others on here of course who have had to deal with IBD. I just remember Cheryl providing a ton of information about paramyxo
wintersreptiles, if you don't find what you're after very quickly on IBD, you should perhaps consider writing about paramyxovirus! It's a scary disease, and a lof of herpers aren't even aware of its existence! Many people have heard of IBD, eventhough there isn't a ton of info available about it. I think either disease would be very valuable for you to research & write about.
Best of luck & happy herping! :)

i was talking to david b. at high end herps about burmese pythons and other diseases and this is what he told me about burms disease. pretty much summerized it in a couple sentences lol
IBD
(Incusion Body Disorder), which is a very contagious
nervous system disease that is always 100% fatal. IBD has symptoms such as
uncoordination, extreme lethargy, star-gazing (looking
straight up for extended periods of time) and cork-screwing
of the head, neck and body when attempting to move. Plus,
IBD sufferers tend to have an appetite, they just don't
possess the neccesary coordination in late stages to
consume a meal.
hope this helps.

I'm sorry, but that's not true. depressed appetite is one of the hallmark symptoms. the rest, yeah, but not that about the appetite.
also, there hasn't yet been enough research to suggest whether or not it's 'very contagious'.
there is evidence of both horizontal and vertical transmission. there is circumstantial evidence implicating a retrovirus, or more likely a family of retroviruses. there is also anecdotal evidence of a mite vector, but again, not enough research to prove it. it is not thought to be airborne, but that's a cautious assessment as they're not sure yet.
boas can be asymptomatic carriers for years. there's some evidence that some pythons die within about 6 months or less of exposure, but to say this with certainty is not possible yet. it's thought to be rare in colubrids, although there was a reported probable incident in a King Snake.
