Bump on African Fat Tail
|
|
A friend of mine works at a pet store and they got in a dehydrated fat tail gecko. She took it home and it is now hydrated, shed fine, etc. But it does have this weird, soft and squishy lump right where a "belly button" would be. It doesn't seem to bother her when touched. What do you think it could be? When she brings it back to the store I considered buying it and taking it to the vet, but wanted to get opinions here first.

I don't know about fat tails, but Leos can sometimes get calcium deposits that look like "airbags". These usually occur when they are getting loaded up with extra calcium and they are usually hanging under their arms like little arm pit airbags.

I know about the calcium under the arms, but this is right in the middle of the lower belly, like where a person's belly button would be.

How old is the gecko? Is it young enough that this could be a spot where it was connected to the egg yolk and it just didn't "heal over" yet. sorry, not sure of the technical term.

Synath - no idea if geckos can get hernias.
danicat - not sure how old it is exactly, but is def. yhoung adult. Think this bump is harmless?

If it doesn't harm the gecko when touched, I see no reason to consider it harmful, yet....make a log of when this bump was recorded, and if it does bother him/her when touched then consider a vet's attention.

I don't know about fat tails, but I know that leo's can sometimes scar strangely. I have a female sunglow who burned her tail as a baby and she has two "bumps" like you speak of (I can only guess, as there is no picture) coming off of her tail where the burn healed. They look a little funny, but they don't bother her. Maybe the fat tail had a bad shed or got burned on his belly?
