Q: Is my Yemen gravid?

Hello all, i have had male yemens for ages, when my frilled dragon sadly passed away i decided her empty viv could go to a good use and i would get a girl yemen, also i was curious about breeding. But that wasnt why i got her and i wasnt even thinking about it yet.The female i eventually recieved was huge, from her size i would say she is about a year and a half old. I showed her to yemmy but she instantly went dark green with blue and yellow markings, so i put her in her viv. Over a couple of days she kept showing the dark green with the blue and yellow marking, then today i found her digging and she is still randomly displaying the dark colouration.I have read on the internet that the colouring could be that shes gravid, others say its stress, but she is on her own in a huge 5ft x 6ft x 4ft viv with all the right heating, lighting, ect.

I have since built a nesting plot, 9 inches deep and 12 inches square out of peat and sand as i had read they need it large and deep. She is starting to dig in it, but she walks away after abit. Also she is really fat! Could she already of been mated before i got her? The pet shop didnt say. So there comes the question i have, Is she gravid?

Any advise is greatly recieved i love all of my yemens and i want to do right by her.

Thanks kate

For those of you that don't know a yemen chameleon is same thing as a veiled.  Anywho they'll lay eggs even if they aren't fertile.  Could be gravid might not be.  Black, yellow, and green usually means gravid.  The blue usually just means the female is sexually mature.  If I read what you said right i'd say it's just sexualy mature and may be looking to lay eggs but most likely not fertile.  I could have misread what you typed though I just got off work after a 12 hour shift.   You should also be able to feel if she's gravid.

You just gently feel around you should feel eggs inside.  Don't like squeeze her but gently palpate.

It could be that she is devloping eggs, Have you tried moving the male to her cage for mating? If she keeps the dark/bright spotted coloration it's very likely she'll lay eggs and it should be within the month, so keep a good look out for them.

Reading again your cage is large, you coould move the male in for a few day as long as she does not start acting agressive. If she ignores or shows breeding colors leave the together until she shows the dark/spotted coloration again for a few days.

Ive had a gentle poke as it were and i think i can feel something, but im not sure, Titus i did put poor Yemmy(one of my males) in there and she was fine for about 2 minutes, he climbed over to her and she was instantly dark green with the spots and was hissing, mouth wide open and wobbling from side to side. He did try and grab her but she flung herself off the branch, she didnt hurt herself but i decided to save Yemmy from getting his bum kicked and her the stress factor i removed him. She has now dug a tunnel, but she hasnt laid eggs, she keeps going back, then digging somewhere else. Im sure she was me on a piece of string. Yemmys a very hansome lad i dunno what her problem is with him.lol

Thanks guys for all your help

Kate

Hiya yes she had 43 eggs on good friday!!!!!! some were yellow but most were bright white. I was told they were like tic tacs but they were more like mini eggs. Since then some have become really yellow and sunken, but i still have 32 for now. Im just glad she is ok and if i get a few new little faces its a bonus. Ill keep you posted :)
