Q: Ticks?! WTF!...or...Reasons to ALWAYS quarantine

So, we got two ATB's two weeks ago. We were told mite free, blah blah blah. Everything seemed on the up and up. One ate, one wouldn't. The one that wouldn't eat shed. So, I wanted to to compare how it looked before the shed and how it looks now. Well, I looked at pictures I took two days ago, and guess what. I see something, can't tell if its a mite or a tick. So then I look at more pictures, also taken two days ago, and see even more! I look at pictures from a week ago, and nothing!!

Here are the two pics:

So, are these ticks, mites or what?! I have never dealt with this, so I don't know exactly what to do. I know I need mite off. They weren't kept near the other herps, nothing was ever switched between them. The only thing was the one in the picture above wouldn't eat. We ended up feeding that to our Sav. Should we treat the sav to?

Always quarantine!!!

Just looked in there...this same snake has stuff crawling all over it. The other one doesn't seem to have anything. Is mite off ok to use?

Well i just looked up mite off and ppl say it works great too so i guess if you still quarantine him and spray once a day he will be good and also spray around his cage just to prevent it from sticking around, good luck!

Those are adult female mites. First time I had them was also on a ATB. I havent tried Mite Off, but Ill swear by Prevent a Mite.

Apparently, a water is enough to kill them...you just gotta flush them all out. I was just reading on Melissa Kaplan's website. She said that you could use betadine or lysterine in a bath and that would kill them and soothe the bites. Then you fumigate the tub (should be easy enough) and boom, dead mites. Repeat once in a 6 week period, and keep an eye out on everyone else! Keep your fingers crossed...I don't wanna be known as the breeder who "has mites".

Start by soaking and then spray them with Reptile reilief.

I think we're going with the nix treatment after reading. Going to treat the savannah monitor, too, since he's about 2 foot away from them.

as a for-warning treat everything you touch like its radioactive, cause those little buggers can get anywhere even on you  and your clothes. i even stripped down to underwear while I removed the snake from the enclouse to the tub...

We've used Equate Bedding Spray from WalMart with great success. Its the same as the ingredients in Provent-A-Mite, but a fraction of the price.
The key thing is, though, to make sure EVERYTHING you sprayed is completely dry before you reintroduce the animal. The stuff causes horrible neuro problems and can be fatal unless its completely dry.

I'd say close to half of the rescues we get have mite issues (thank GOD for the quarantine room!). This always seems to work the quickest and without the need to retreat frequently.

Go to a vet and get a bottle of spray Front Line Flee and tick spray, stops em all dead in their tracks within hours. Whip down all the en closers you'll never get ride of them all until you do...remove water 24 hours prior, remove the snakes and place in separate bins temporarily, mist down each enclosure, let them dry and air out well, then give each snake a light mist and wipe it over them thoroughly. Air them out make sure they are doing well, then put them back in the striped cages. 24 hours more without water then your good. I even sprayed the outside of the cages down as well as the surrounding carpet. You might want to treat 30 days later just in case.

Wow, a lot of recommendation for some nasty stuff here. Melissa Kaplans stuff is always pretty right on...I use the betadine. Those are definetly ticks and not mites, mites are a lot smaller. I would use mineral oil for the eyes if they have any near them. Glob it on the kill the parasite then wipe off the excess after 24 hrs. Mineral oil is totally harmless. I have used the cheap bedding spray but I always let it dry for a couple hours and then check it before I put the animal back on it. I have only had to use provent a mite on mouse mites...the cheap stuff kills every reptile parasite (external) I have encountered so far.

Any thing and every thing should be quarantined, good thing it was only bugs and not deadly.

I'm very glad that these guys were far away from all my other snakes. Unfortunately, the sav was also being quarantined, so he gets treated too. I was looking at them, I think they are mites. There are now a LOT of them and they are moving around really fast all over the snake and in some spots in the tub.

I'm doing the nix mix, getting ready to spray everything down. Bought some cheap gloves and a cheap long sleeve shirt so I can get bit and not care then throw them away afterwards. This will be the first time holding the ATB's since I brought them home, should be fun!

I agree with MTDrew, Nix is definitely the way to go. Just curious, did you buy the animals local? or did you get them from someone online? If so, who?

Nix worked great! I went ahead and treated the sav and a few other folks, but don't think anything is going on anywhere else. I got these two from a guy who was selling his collection at the last All Animal Expo in Wheaton, IL. He had bred them and said he treated for mites every 6 months just in case. He was, however, set up beside a guy who had lots of wild caught stuff, some of which we saw had ticks on them. So, might be where they came from. But, they are clean for now, getting another dose in three days, then we'll see what happens after that!

Nix is awesome and it smells good too .. did you notice, like clean smell .. i  dunno maybe im weird.
glad it worked and for your info, since the first spray down i never saw another live mite and when buying more snakes its the first thing that gets done, im sure it will be habbit for you also.

I'm sorry, but I'm confused about something - you had an ATB for less than 2 weeks that didn't eat, that came in with a mite-infected snake, and you fed it to your Sav? not the fact that you fed a snake to your monitor, I understand that. however, weren't you concerned about your Sav being exposed to whatever the ATB had? for example, crypto's not species-specific and often affects appetite. I'm not trying to start an argument, I just don't understand why you'd take the risk?

No, I fed the mouse that the snake wouldn't touch to the monitor. I would not feed my snakes to a monitor. I offered a mouse to one ATB, he wouldn't take it. I then offered it to the other ATB and he ate. The second mouse that I had out went to the sav.
