Q: What to do when not at home?

After reading all of the horror stories about leaving pets unattended, I've decided to ask a few questions about it. The hubby and I will be leaving this Friday morning to Wyo for his sister's college graduation, which will be on Saturday, and we won't be coming back till Sunday morning. The dogs will be coming with us, thankfully, but my other babies won't be coming along. It will be the first time that I will leave my reptiles alone for two days.

We will be getting a couple of timers to control the lights and the heater that are in the herp room so that they turn off and on in the morning and at night. I'm debating whether or not to leave a few crickets in the cage with Lizzie or to just not feed her at all. Also, I'm going to ask my mom to come over and check on them once a day as well... do you think that's enough? I really don't want anyone to get hurt, any and all suggestions/concerns are welcome. I want to learn from other's mistakes, rather than my own.

Thanky,
Gladys

assuming midna and lizzie are the only ones you have, they should be fine. just make sure that the lights are well secured and on a timer and both have fresh water before you leave. if im reading the post right it sounds like youll only be gone for two or three days and that is not a big deal at all for what you have.

if you have any friends that are into snakes, maybe see if they can stop by once or twice?  I'm lucky enough to have several friends will and able to do that for me when I go out of town, then again, I have a very large group of animals :)

Yep, I only have two reptiles. I figured it was no big deal, but I just don't want there to be an accident or anything, ya know? Thank you.

Seems as if you already have a good plan for them. I think they will be ok!

This is a great, great question.

just a couple of days, typically not a big deal... if you don't have thermostats, you need to get one... set it, forget it, and i mean forget it.

heat kills more often than cold.

Put a live, edible plant or two in with the beardie. Crickets that aren't eaten right when you drop them in will quickly just hide under the water dish all day and then forage around all night when the lizard is sleeping, so they're kind of useless. You could try leaving a deep dog dish with mealworms or supers in it, but they'll just end up getting eaten all at once anyway. I don't think beardies are well-known for rationing their supplies.
if either animal is prone to spoiling their water dish, you might want to take precautions there. Either by offering an extra dish, or switching to one that's too small to fit into. I mean, right after it happens it's technically no big deal, since there's nothing there that wasn't already in them anyway, but after a warm day of bacterial growth you can actually end up looking at a potentially bigger health risk than missing a few crickets.

I typically take everything out of her tank when I feed her crickets, cause I don't want those little bastards to drown in her water or hide in her log or anywhere else. What kind of edible plant would you suggest?
