Snakes chasing humans is one of the oldest myths. Like them grabbing their tails and rolling down a hill like a hoop. Snakes don't chase things that can kill them.

According to : http://www.alabamaherps.com/snake%20bite.htm#SnakebiteStatistics

In the US, Cottonmouth are responsible for about 10% of venomous snake bites. The American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) has reported no mortality from Cottonmouth envenomation since its first annual report in 1983.

Mortality/Morbidity: The American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) has reported only one death from moccasin envenomation since its first annual report in 1983. Prospective studies of morbidity from moccasin envenomation have not been conducted. However, in two retrospective studies of copperhead victims, patients missed a median of 2 or 6 weeks of work.

And annually, 45,000 snakebites in the US and Canada. 7,000 to 8,000 are venomous
3,000 cases considered "illegitimate" meaning these bites occurred while the victim handled or molested the snake

So, depending on your numbers, looks like 400-800 cottonmouth bites a year.

I'm hoping for US cases. The more specific, the better,

the only snake I've heard about that chased someone was a black mamba, sid it chased a police officer in africa a mile. But like aaron said, it was probably a myth. Biting their tails and rolling downhill sounds fun :-)

Cottonmouths are not found in Canada. So X>200.

Well, hang on a second. If Canada had 6,999 venomous snake bites out of the 7,000, that might not be true.

However, Each year, approximately 7,000 people receive bites from poisonous snakes in the United States
http://www.rwjuh.edu/health_information/adult_nontrauma_snake.html

And your 10% is 700.

Actually, me and two of my friends, all at different times, were chased by Cottonmouths. I know it's not the "normal" thing but it is certainly not a myth. It's a myth that all snakes chase or that all venomous snakes chase, but there have been quite a few circumstances that they have been aggressive. Neither the three of us were bothering them in every case, we actually were at a distance from them, but because we were in their territority (Or maybe because it was breeding season) we were chased out of it.

And yeah, I heard about the black mamba chasing as well, though I don't remember when.

Depends how you define "chase" really... If you make an analogy to a dog defending it's yard, versus someone chasing you to rob or kill you, the latter is what more people will define as "chase". And snakes don't chase.

Ah, okay then, that makes sense. Yes, it was definately a "run off the property" type thing, not a want to kill me run.

Aaron -- black racers have been known to give chase for short distances when cornered.  Which explains why I've been chased so many times.

but it's well-known that snakes are often chased. I LOVE this video. sorry it's OT, but still semi-relevant http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPM91j1oFmc

I've been chased by buttermilk racers but never a cotton mouth. i see them all the time in my area and never really see them get aggressive as long as they aren't messed with. anything will fight back when cornered.

I lost $20. On the over/under about bites. And now I have to give this Wop at least credit about them coming after him.

Well we have a good bit of Cottonmouths around here and the only time anyone has been "chased" per say, is when my buddy stumbled on a mommy with some babies but when he ran about fifty yards she went back to the babies. So its like the dog and the yard deal.
