Q: White Lipped Python aggression?

My boyfriend and I got a young White Lipped Python this weekend at the reptile show that was in seattle. We were told that these guys are super aggressive, and that we would need gloves to handle them. However this little guy is a bit jumpy, but overall easy to handle and has not even attempted to strike at us. He is actually quite pleasant to handle and amazing to look at!! I was also told that these guys will get meaner as they get older, despite being conditioned to being handled. Is this true? Should we expect a temperament change as he grows? Any information would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks. :D

people told me the same thing about my rock python and my anacondas. It all just depends on how much handling you do and how much trust he will have in you. You can tame snake if you put time into it. It's the same with amazon tree boas, they are really angry nturally, but I've seen alot that are very trustworthy that I would call tame enough for a small child to hold. The white lips are very amazing, my favorites are the black white lips, and they can get to a decent size for a medium sized snake. If it ever starts to act aggressive just let me know nd I'll be more than happy to tame it out for you, don't get rid of it! lol there are alternatives

Lol. I don't plan on getting rid of him anytime soon. I think he will be easy to tame. I would like a black phase one too, I just don't know where to look for them! I thought black sometimes just naturally happened. I will look more into it.

I haven't had a white lip neo, but I did aquire a subadult/adult as a rescue about 3 years ago. I've read that they are naturally an agressive species but like with all things, their is always exceptions. If you handle him, and care for him properly, he will probably stay calm. With the one I resuced, he was so agressive he would launch himself into my face to bite. I handled him minimally. Covered the door of his enclosure so he wouldnt strike at everything, and started to feed him F/T. It was ovbious he was being fed live as he had tons of bites, scars, and open wounds on him. 3 years later... his wounds are healed, and he's still an angry individual but I can now handle him without the use of a hook. Just be prepared to possibly take some bites in the furture. They arent that bad. :)

Good luck with him, white lipped pythons are a wonderful species!

not really much more to add here.  biotech and tree trunk answered it all.  while they are said to be more aggressive, i have herd that some people can get them to calm down with frequent handling.  even with the aggression, this is a species i am highly interested in and hope to get some down the road.

Brad (bwaffa) has White lipped that are not aggressive.  With a bit of time and patience I believe most snakes can be tamed. You can also read about Dave Alverson's (tarotwolf) adventures with his white lipped Sri kandi through his blogs.

Brad's Demi

A Black phase that I had which was also very tame and this one was WC.

I've had them before and none of mine were aggressive. It just depends on the animal.

Cool. That's why I asked. I figured with handling and time I wouldn't have problems. There were just a few people that felt the need to be know it alls and tell me it was a mistake to buy a whitelip. I've only dealt with balls and a few side things like burms and a a few RTBs so I was unsure if maybe they were right. The guy I have now is super easy to handle and I belive he will be a great snake. Thanks!!

Actually, Demi and Golden Boy now live with Dave and me (at least while Brad's in school). They are both highly cage aggressive but once out of the cage they are almost dog tame. This didn't happen overnight though. I know that Brad worked with them extensively to keep them this way.

The black phase is found in the Southern part of Indonesia and the golden is from the Northern part of the country. Temperament differs from snake to snake. With our blacks, 'kandi is much more aggressive than 'ka but with consistent handling she is getting much better.

White lip pythons are definitely not beginner snakes but they also are not THAT much different in care. You want to make sure and feed them slowly so they don't grow too fast. Also, the first year is the most crucial. They have very thin skin and need to be kept at a slightly higher humidty for the first year. Once you get past that year they do very well with pretty standard python care.

Good luck with yours!

I have 3 fully grown whitelips (2F + 1M), which I have had since juveniles.  Mine are super agressive.  They will stike at you thru the glass.  HOWEVER, if you take them out very gently and let them settle down for a few minutes, they become really nice - no bities.  I think that they are just a very nervous snake.

You have Demi and the Golden Boy Deb? That is soooo not fair!!!! LOL

I should have mentioned the black I had was a bit nervous and tricky getting out ot the cage at certain times. She would randomly strike now and then but was fine as long as she knew I was picking her up. Almost retic like. This nervousness also made her difficult to feed at times because she would just strike and release feeders. It may have taken on average at least a half a dozen feeding attempts before she would hit, curl and then finally start to swallow.  I've never had any other snake behave like this.

I had a juvie white-lipped and it was the most defensive snake i've ever owned by leaps and bounds.  As i would walk by my snake room (not in front of the animal's cage mind you, just in front of the doorway to the room),  he would be thumping the glass repeatedly.  I was 15 feet away!  I never had him long enough to find out if his personality changed.  That is my only personal experience with them, BUT i have known people that have kept them and they were not bad at all.  I wouldn't think yours would get worse with age (since snakes usually mellow with age) unless you don't handle it often.

Good luck with it - they are amazingly cool snakes.

Keep in mind White-lips have one of the fastest recorded strikes of any snake.  Beautiful snakes and very underappreciated.
