Q: Red Mites On Beardies
Posted By:

PatHigdon

Seems that my Beardies have been over come with Red Mites (bird mites?) I have been keeping them in a screen cage outside during the day and bringing them inside at nite.

I have NEVER had an issue with mites on my Beardies or lizards for that matter. What do ya'll recommend I do to treat them.

I have already hosed the inside & outside cages down with Permethrin 10 spray. But what can I put on the dragons themselves?

Could they be juvenile "snake mites" I've used Reptile Relief on my snakes - I believe it's safe for lizards, too. Might have to be more careful by the eyes?

Hopefully this doesn't come across wrong, but my vet is strongly against reptile relief.  It's toxic and unsafe.  Honestly I don't understand why NOBODY mentions it or even uses it.  FRONTLINE FOR REPTILES!!!!!  It's a one shot n ur done treatment.  It's pricy putting it between 25-35 dollars at the vet (buy it online for cheaper) but honestly it's a single treatment session.  It's not like proventamite, the jimmy rigged treatments they've already told on here or anything else.  You spray the animal down let it dry on them, spray a paper towel down n wipe out the cage n you're done.  No treating every day for 4 weeks or whatever treatment regimens r out there.  So when you think about it.  Although the bottle costs 25-35 dollars, you're only using maybe 2 dollars worth when you treat.  And if you're only treating a handful of animals the bottle will last you forever.  The red bugs sounds like those little cherry spiders or dirt mites.  I don't think they're nypmh snake mites, those would be white.  So I honestly don't think you have to be worried.  I would rinse your lizards down, sounds like you've got their tubs covered.  You should be good.  If it does get out of hand, google Frontline Reptile spray or Frontline mite treatment and you should be able to find it. A little of this stuff goes a long way and my boyfriend and I have been using it for a year or so now with no trouble and never a reoccurence with mites.  Well I wont leave a book for you so I'll stop jabbing :)

As far as I know, Frontline is not specifically recommended nor made for reptiles. I googled and I didn't find anything to change that belief. If you have a link to some proven info., I would love to take a look at it. Why/What about Reptile Relief is toxic and unsafe?

I can take a picture of the bottle and email it to you.  It's a mite treatment spray specifically for snakes and reptiles.  If you want to back it up ask Katie M.  She also uses it.  I'm pretty sure you're familiar to her. I wont buy something that's not vet remcomended anymore.  I go to the the top reptile vet in the Pacific Northwest and so far every experience I've had with him has proven true and 100% safe.  Like he says, why am I having you pay me if I'm not going to treat/fix the problem?  I'll see if I can find it on the net.  I'll link it to you if/when I do.  Like I said.  Talk to Katie M.  She'll back me up and our vet.  I have used my vet since before I met Katie and same with frontline.  None of this is stuff she's reccomended me.  We just happened to use the same vet and mite treatment.  Reptile relief isn't natural and the chemicals they use to kill the mites are as I said, chemicals. Plus it doesn't work every time.  We've had to treat and retreat with it.  Anyways, it's all in personal preferance.  I prefer to use what my vet reccomends.

The front line dealio really works! Its amazing, and you can ask Katie M as well if you have any reservations. She told me and I'll never use anything else if I ever have to...The only animals I would be werry of are rainbow boas, tends to dehydrate them. But all the other lizards, boas, pythons, ect worked like a charm and never saw another one after that. As far as any treatment really goes, Pyrethrins/pyrethroids and Fipronil are the active killing/preventative agents in any Flea/tick/mite spray. Check the labels, Reptile Relief, Mite Off, Front line, pest strips, ect ect ect... You could honestly mix and make your own front line from the hardware store for less than half the cost. A friend of mine does major pesticide development for a major University and has broken down the structure of all the brands and mixes and you don't have to have anything fancy just the right amount of toxins.

Has it occured to any one that these may be wood mites or wood spiders, you did say they were out side and these were large mites right?en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spider_mite like this ? Using proventamite or other mite type treatment won't hurt but I don't think if this is what tey are that they will harm your beardie or infest your home. Could be irritating and may infest bedding so treating is a good idea but not something to worry about being contagious.

Sonja, I have not been able find Reptile Relief around my neck of the woods. The Petsmarts around here used to sell it.

Megan, I would love some more info on the FrontLine stuff.

I have already hosed all indoor and outdoor caging with Permethrin 10 spray. I have never had to deal with mites on lizards before, so this whole deal has thrown me for a loop.

most mite treatments are toxic to reptiles and should be used with precaution. whatever you use, the water bowl should be removed temporarily to help avoid ingestion. the cheapo walmart stuff (ill mention the name when i remember) carries the same exact ingredients as proventamite and cocts like 4-5 bucks. its a lice treatment. most of these medications are used to kill arachnids, which is what mites are. the same can be used to treat dogs with ticks, since ticks are arachnids too. whatever chemical nuke path you take to rid of the pests, i recommend simply keeping your animals indoors.

When will  people stop being IDIOTS and realize that just because both the knockoff lice spray and provent-a-mite say the same main ingredient... there are many different TYPES of that same ingredient. They are NOT the same thing!!!! I tried lice spray once a long time ago when I had a few mites crawling around. you know what it did? jack squat. Got myself provent-a-mite and that worked reaaaallllyyy well. If you are too cheap to spend a few extra dollars to buy the real thing, why the heck are you keeping exotic animals in the first place?!

It depends on which species of mite as for their color. Some are red and these are more commonly seen on lizards. Personally i use Nix or Rid if i have to treat for mites. Provent a mite is about the only other thing i would recommend that works and is safe. i would like some info on the frontline product as well though.
