Q: MITES!!!!

So unfortunately my pythons and boas caught mites. I've cleaned out all the cages thoroughly, and tried using predatory mites to eradicate them, with not much success. Then i started using "Mite-Off" from ZooMed, still with not much progress. I'm going crazy at this point because they're just not dieing. Does anyone have any other suggestions to help me out? Thanks guys

Reptile Relief Mite Spray by Natural Chemistry works great for me. I hope you get rid of them soon!

Provent a mite.  Best you can buy and will kill all your mites and mite eggs.

I swear by Nix or Rid lice remover. Mixed 50/50 with water and lathered over the entire snake, let it sit for no more than ten minutes the rinse thoroughly. I also mix it one teaspoon to 60 teaspoons in a spray bottle to treat the enclosures and decor, rinsing it all out good with a bleach solution before putting it back in. You can also spray it around infested enclosures on the stand or floor to help kill any mites trying to move to a new area. Provent-a-Mite is something I've used as well and many people swear by it.

Spry the cage after it is set up all but warter dish with Provent a Mite! Rub mineral oil from head to tail on your snakes! Make them all oily! This will drown the mites on them, and not hurt your snakes! Then in a week oil them again! The provent a mite will last for abot a month, but you should clean your cage before than! This Has always worked for me when I got a snake from someone with mites!

Another vote for Prevent A Mite. Everything else Ive tried wouldnt kill the mite eggs and they would be infested again in a couple months.

We have used the Natural Chemistry spray when needed. We rub the snakes with the NC and spray Equate bedding spray on paper towels to use as the bedding. Let the paper towels dry competely and put them in the tub/tank and then rub the Natural Chemistry on the snakes and put them in. We do this every 3 days times 3. So just to be clear thats doing it 3 times in a row every 3 days. It has worked good for us. Hope you find something to get rid of em.

Wow, seems like some conflicting ideas...I use generic lice spray. I do not ever spray it on my snakes. Here is what I do...

Remove snake from cage (or drawer in my case) and put in safe place. The bathtub is a good idea so they can soak while you do the rest. An alternative is a rubbermaid shoe, sweater, or larger tote with just enough water to submerge the thickest part of the snake but they can still coil and have the head out of the water. Clean all waste and shed skin, spray the bedding until it is damp but not wet. Stir it around if it is a thick layer and spray again. Let dry for at least 20 minutes. Wipe off the sides if it is a glass aquarium/tank. Wash the water dish. In the mean time if you use a bark or cork hide put it in the oven on the lowest setting for about an hour, let it cool  before you put it back. If you have plastic or whatever for the hide soak it in bleach water. If you can't bake it or soak it get rid of it and get something else. After the enclosure has been sprayed and dried, the dishes and cage furniture have soaked and dried or baked and cooled and its time to put the snake back, spray a tiny bit of mite spray into a hand size towel and wipe the snake from behind its head to its tail. If you notice mites near its eyes heat pits or that crack under the chin, use mineral oil on a q-tip to wipe them off.

Repeat in 10 days.

Good Luck

Just use the BK or PAM. NOW the REAL issue: WHY did they catch mites? what new did you bring in without Quarantine? Did you switch your food guy and they hitched a ride? Mites aren't the end of the world....just the diseases they bring with them can be... Good luck and this is why everything goes through quarantine I don't care where it comes from it stays outta my snake room for a month minimum (thats just for people i trust and know) everything else is a 6 month minimum qt time.

PS the predatory mites will work as a prevention kind of thing but they will be killed by the BK and PAM as well as the snake mite, if you do some searching on here theres more questions, answers specifically to that. Be very careful doing home made mite treatments and the nix stuff, Pyrethrin/permetherin poisoning isn't very cool, causes severe neurological damage and your snakes motor functions will be screwy forever.

Yes Pyrethrin IS a neuro-toxin. But when mixed properly with water, the percentage is so low that it's just enough to kill insects and not harm the snakes.

I swear by Nix, when used properly. I personally think a 50/50 with water is TOO high of a percentage of Nix. I use one of the small bottles of Nix with an entire gallon of distilled water and it's perfect.

While the Nix treatment works since it is a pyrethrin, I'm one to go the easy route and just use Provent-a-Mite or the lice bedding spray.  By spraying the cage and letting it dry, then using sprayed newpaper as substrate for 45 days I have found that no mite will survive and the snakes do just fine.

Patrick has the good question though - find out how they got into your collection. Every snake that comes into my house is quarantined and proactively treated for mites during that time - solves a couple problems at once and helps to ensure that I won't have to treat all 80+ snakes.

I had mites, well my snakes had mites a bit ago. We sprayed all the cages with prevent-a-mite, left in the sun to dry.. Then got the mite oil, it's this yellow oil, cant remember the name but it shoud be at a pet store, not petco, anywho, put that all over the snakes every few days. In two weeks all the mites were gone. Once the tanks are dry, in like an hour, you can put the snakes back in.

I had a persistent mite problem for months. Tried many products from the local pet stores and they just kept coming back. I bought provent-a-mite, sprayed the cages, soaked my snakes in water for a few days and used some mite-off on them directly. The mites were gone in under a week. Provent-a-mite definitely killed the eggs that were my problem. Also, thanks Petco for the mites :(

I have been dealing with mites myself (only a week away from finishing my mite treatment, and I am using Provent a mite. This spray is a god send! I spray it in my tank and let it evaporate, and give my snake a bath while i'm waiting for the spray to evaporate. I also put in PAM sprayed paper towels (both sides) and it has been working wonderfully! Keep in mind that the life cycle of a mite is 45 days, so even if you dont see them, EGGS ARE TOO SMALL TO SEE and WILL continue to hatch! If you continue PAM treatments until the 45 days is up...your mites will be DEAD AND GONE! My .02 ~Alyy

I wouldn't say that the water dilutes the permetherin that much.....Ive used Permertherin forever and I got two neuro snakes because of it now. Its a very touchy chemical to use, and I don't recommend it to beginners. Find out how the animals got the mites, and practice QT all the way!!

clean the cages with 1:20 bleach and water. use newspaper as bedding for right now mites cannot support life on it.
