Q: Questions about albino "het genetic markers"
Posted By:

Don and Allens Balls

OK so are there such things as genetic markers for Het ball's? I have done some reading and some say yes and some say no. Has anyone had any experience with this? I have a male het albino that I would like to know for sure if he is het. Well not for sure I know but maybe a good guess.

It depends on what trait you're looking for as to whether there are markers. As far as I know, there is not one for the albino trait.

For het pieds, they usually have clear bellies with "railroad track" markings along the sides of the bottom of the snake.

I'm sure there are others that can comment about animals het for recessive traits. The only way to really be sure though is to either see the parents first hand or purchase from a reputable breeder that guarantees their animals as what they are sold as.

+1 for Deb. I have not heard of markers for Albino's Your best bet is to stick with getting your hets from reputable breeders who offer a guarantee. Also be aware that there are 100% hets and a range of possible hets. Be sure of what you are buying.

The only other way of knowing whether or not you have a heterozygous animal is to breed it to either a visible or a known 100% het.

Hmm.. I got him for free from a friend that was going to breed but never did. I dont know where he got it. But he was told it was het albino. He has a lot of diffrent coloring on him but it looks like I wont know till I get a female het albino.

In your case, I'd see about getting an albino female - then you'll know (hopefully) with the first breeding if he's a het. no guarantee and if you didn't get albinos I'd breed him to a visible morph a second time just to be sure.

Just make sure you get the het. female from somebody you trust says Mr. Obvious.

Ya know, I would just save up $ and get a female albino instead. That way you will know for sure what the genetics of your babies will be no matter what. This way you would have a very minimal chance of wasting your time completely. Albinos hardly seem expensive enough these days to possibly waste your time trying to breed hets. or possible hets. together.  Good luck!!

The only thing to add would be on the het peid having "markers". I know of clutches 100% het, and less than half of the babies have the "markers". It's definitely not a guarantee, and I wouldn't give it any weight. Just my opinion.

+1 everyone

I did see a post recently (not here) that advertised two BCIs, one het. snow, one het. anery and the person selling them said that their "hets were very obvious". I wanted to email, but held my tongue.
