Q: Ball Python with missing mental scale.

My ball python Peter has a cut on his lower jaw right where his tongue comes out (looks like he has lipstick on). I just learned that it is called the mental scale. I have been treating it twice daily with diluted betadine and polysporin ointment. Does anyone have other suggestions for treatment? And is this a common injury? This is my first ball and we like to learn as much as possible.

Tracy, can you get photos?
in my experience, as long as the snake is healthy otherwise, cuts and abrasions need little helping along. snakes have *incredible* healing capacity with regards to scales and skin (and flesh).

How did this happen? Live feed or ???

I agree with Aaron.  These sort of things often heal surprisingly well.  But maybe more important is to make sure you have an idea of what happened so you can avoid future problems.  Maybe rubbing on the side of the enclosure?

Aaron & JohnJohn, I will try to take a photo tonight. It does look like it is healing and he is VERY healthy & eating frozen rats well. He does rub to try to escape a lot and I am thinking that must be how he did it. I just was not sure if a missing scale was different than a cut. Thanks for your help!

Snakes, As Aaron led to, Do very well with external injuries, there almost like little tanks!

However, Internal injuries, and there as good as gone 99% of the time sadly.

Your treating it, while doesn't help heal, will be good to minimize scarring, Id even go as far as to use neosporin.

I was able to catch a picture of his chin. It is in my animal file if anyone cares to look. I still have to learn how to put a photo into the thread. Thanks!

If that's an injury it got in your cage, you wanna make sure you eliminate the source... could be a freak accident, or rubbing on areas consistently, in which case, it may happen again.

however, in my opinion, that needs to be cleaned and left alone until next shed. I don't think you need to do anything more than you've already done.

Thanks Aaron, now I can rest and not worry about him. I will watch it carefully though.

Dont worry too much, my ball python han a part of his tail tip missing, you could see the bone even but after some treatment, it looks like it never happend. I would keep it as clean as possible, mabey clean it with water and gentaly brush any particulates out with a cotton swab. mabey try putting neosporin or polysporin on it (lightly). whatch carefully for infection. i think if you do just the minimum even he will heal in a few sheds. Hope he feels better and i hope i helped, kysnakeguy
