Ball Python injury
|
|
My children were playing with our ball python today and he had a bad fall off the bed. Underneath his neck is swollen and he also has a bit of blood tinged fluid coming out of his mouth. He is curled up tightly and is staying in his hide. I don't know of snake vet nearby and also wonder if anyone thinks there is really anything that they can do. How do I determine how serious this is? Also, if anyone wonders, I ALWAYS monitor my children's snake handling, but today they broke the rules and had him out without permission. They are in big trouble!

a vet visit is a must! while home remedies will heal up the superficial/exterior damage, you have no way of telling what's going on inside of her. if she is bleeding and there is excess muccous out of the mouth i wouldnt be surprised if there was some internal damage.
unless you have an xray machine and are advanced in ball python anatomy i would strongly recommend seeking professional help (from a qualified vet) immediately. good luck!

I agree with the above post, if there was no swelling or blood but he was curling up, I wouldnt worry too much about it, but since you can definitely see something that is not right, I would have someone check him out.

I also agree, this type of injury could be quite serious, and you MUST take the snake to a vet with reptile experience. Try the ARAV.org website if you need help locating a herp vet, or try calling several local vets and asking them if they know of a nearby vet who's very good with reptiles.
Since this injury has broken the skin, the risk of infection is high--at the very least, the snake would likely be put on antibiotics to prevent a deadly infection.

http://herpvetconnection.com/ has a list of vets that service reptiles by state. You can also tell us where you're located; chances are there's members in your area who would be able to refer you to a good vet. I don't have any advice to give, since I've never dealt with that kind of injury, but I hope he recovers quickly for you!

I have to thank you all for your help. Luckily, Peter has bounced back! I am so glad because I just spent $2500 on my dog to have emergency surgery and I have no money left over for more vet bills.
