Q: Carpet Laying Inverted?

SOLD! Thanks, Andy! [AC-RBAH-F1]

I was getting ready to separate my breeding jungle pair to see if they would like to eat a small meal. They have been together since Nov 2. I have seem them "courting" but never really caught copulation though I thought I saw it once or twice, but just wasn't sure. She hasn't shed or anything, but this is how I found her a few minutes ago. She has not shed the entire time which is why I am confused. Any ideas? I'm at a loss! Needless to say, I gave her a nest box and fired up the incubator just in case!

Hmm, that's odd. She hasn't done a pre-ovulation or pre-lay shed?

Is it possible she's just laying funny, or do you think she may actually be gravid? It looks to me like she's getting ready to lay, but that seems odd that she didn't shed.

I have had several ball pythons fool me that way. Having the lay box ready and the incubator fired up is a good back up plan just in case. Keep in mind however, that what you may be seeing is ovulation. That area where it is swelling sure seems more like ovulation than ready to lay eggs. I haven't had but one carpet clutch but plenty of ball pythons so my judgement my be a bit off.

has she ever been with a male before this?  even for just a little bit?  time doesn't seem right for eggs but if she'd been with a male, even briefly, earlier this year it's entirely possible that's what this is from.

In the left bottom side of the pic it looks like she is laying on a shed....Hers or there for scenting reasons?

Miss Andrea

She looks to be slightly large (IMO) around the bottom of the photo. Possibly ovulation. Seem slightly high to me though. I once had a male ball that was showing signs of being ready to lay, odd positions and all. You just never know. Best to be prepared. My female surprised me with 5 eggs last spring when I didn't notice ovulation, sheds, or restlessness. Luckily I could get a make-shift incubator.

I believe they can ovulate even after a brief period of courting, if the male does not fertilize her than you will not get viable eggs. I have seen an article about false ovulation in female pythons, to long ago to remember where to find it again dang it.

Thanks for the feedback.  Keep it coming :)  I offered her a weaned rat last nite and she took it.  So maybe she is just building follicles?

@evergreen - I've never seen her lay this way before so I found that odd.

@Synath - that shed was from the male.

@HurricanJen - She has never been with a male until now.

My money is on follicles or ovulation, but its certainly possible for her to be gravid without you ever having seen the deed. Its also possible that she lay without a pre-lay shed, it does happen. Given that she ate, she didn't shed and they've only sorta courted, I bet she's just getting into the swing of things now. Mine are all paired up nicely and apparently doing nothing as well. Brats.

I'm at a loss then hun.  Our Suri did the same thing but it was all false.  Best of luck and I'll cross my fingers for suprise eggs.
