Q: Borneo blood not defecating?
Posted By:

I have a one year old Borneo Blood Python. I keep his cage at a constant 80-82 degrees and about 65% humidity. I feed him pre-killed rats about once every 9 or 10 days. I bought him in August, and since then have fed him on a regular schedule. Each time I clean his cage, I search for any defecation he might have left, but find nothing. After feeding him for almost 3 months and not finding any obvious signs of defecation, I am wondering if I am not doing something right. I have even tried massaging him in warm water to try to get things moving. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have not kept any bloods, And really hav'nt done any research on them, But I always thought they needed A basking spot that hit 88+ and a bit higher humidity?

But i'd wait for those with experience to chime in before taking that advice.

Also, do they happen to have a slower metabolism, It would make sense...

Not sure though..

It does'nt sound like he's impacted...  But its something to keep an eye out for...

Other then the warm baths, I can't think of a whole lot more to do at home.

Ohh, Yeah,  forgot.   Back sometime ago I almost bought a Large Blood Python  (the guy had dropped the price considerably, I realized why when I had a 5' Snake latch onto my forearm..)

One of the other guys at the show told me if they don't have enough space they can't stretch out, and that can cause problems like this...   What size enclosure is it in?

Well Kaiyudsai might be able to confirm this because he has alot of experience with Blood pythons but I am assuming like my red blood python they don't defecate as often as other snakes do.

They have a much slower metabolism than most other snakes. I would bump the heat up on one side and try soaking him again. I would also slow down the feedings to once every 14 days or so.

You might try offering one of the microwavable burritos I made the mistake of indulging in tonight.  UGH!  Good lord!

Hey.  I've never had a blood python, but I've always been tempted.  This post got my curiosity going again.  So, what size enclosure do you guys recommend for bloods?

Well right now, mine is only about 30 inches long. I have him in a 40 gallon tank for now so he has a lot of room to stretch out. He uses the space once and a while, but spends most of his time curled up under his little hideaway log.

Just so you know, our Sumatran Black blood doesn't poop too often, either. We feed him every 10 days.
Whenever we get concerned about this pooping issue with one of our snakes, we let them swim in the bathtub - lukewarm water and room to swim (exercise) usually does wonders.

Well today I gave my buddy a warm bath and he swam for a while....and after about 5 minutes, he pooped right in the tub! I was surprised it happened so fast after not going for so long! I cleaned the tub pretty well after that, haha. Thanks guys!

Glad your boy's doing well.  I checked out his pics and he is a beauty.  Love that striped corn snake too!
