one of my new bci. has been producing quite alot of saliva blowing bubbles, yawning!!!! i know a few things that can cause saliva build up... does anyone have any advice? how long should i observe her before i go have her checked. any other things i can keep an eye out for to make a more educated diagnosis? shes not stargazing... temps and humidty are normal i.e 90 degrees 75% humidty (i have a rack in rep room everything is ambiently 90...)  shes still nice and alerate, active when i hold her, no mucus in her mouth really just excess saliva.

again any advice would be greatly appreciated thank you

Sounds like an RI.  Take her to the vet and get some anitbotics.

I'm not experienced with RIs, but as far as the basic conditions for a Bci... both the ambient temp. and humidity you are stating is higher than I keep my Bci and higher than recommended. The humidity my animals do well in is 50 - 60%. The ambient temp. or the cool side should be in the low 80s with the hot spot in the upper 80s to 90 degrees.

I have to say, though, I am not sure what symptoms could/would result from those two factors being too high.

well sonja living in florida keeping you humidty that low all the time is hard... i can attempt to lower it. but that would basiclly be just creating more air flow in thier tubs I dont have to spray them because our humidty is so high all the time anyway... and af far as temps the lower end of there tub stays in the 82-84 range i keep my racks thermostat at 90 is what i should have said... they rarely reach that ambient room temp is 80, i though it might be an RI

ill go to the vet this afternoon

Okay... you had stated the ambient was 90, that's why I was a bit concerned - thinking there wasn't a way for your animal to get cooler.

As far as humidity, a couple ideas... if you don't have holes drilled in the tubs, you could put a few in to create some air flow - or make additional ones if there are some. The substrate you choose to use can effect the level of humidity, too.

I think that a vet visit is a good idea, too. Let us know what happens. : )

What you are describing sounds like an RI to me. One of my Bci's has a respiratory infection right now from me foolishly changing his whole enviornment from a plastic tub to a glass tank and from newspaper to aspen and I put him in another room that was colder then he was used to

He also had what lookeds like saliva coming from his mouth and nose. I took him to my exotic vet and she told me he had an RI and prescribed antibiotic shots for me to give him and to switch him back to the tub (glass tanks are horrible for boa c.'s) with newspaper. She said to up the hot spot temps to 90 F to 92F why he is recovering. She also told me to soak him in warm water everyday while he is sick and to coupage him. Coupaging is holding him upside down (head down) and tapping firmly, but gently on the side and upper 1/3 of his body where his lungs are to simulate "coughing". Snakes do not have diaphrams and so cannot cough up mucus. That is why RI's are so dangerous to them. With the coupaging you are helping to loosen up that mucus like a cough would us.

I hope this helps.

I don't know what your vet charges where you live, but my vet visit with the antibiotics cost me $101. Not too bad. My snakes are worth it.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Definitely an RI. I've only ever had one snake get one and it was a bp, but it just looked like a lot of clear slimy saliva. If it's not too advanced you can nip it with just some alterations in care.

Yep, presume the RI route.

Were you able to get him seen yesterday? What did the vet say?
