Q: Breeding Boa Constrictors

Okay I have looked at care sheet unpon care sheet, website apon website and can't seem to get an actual answer. How big does a Female boa have to be to breed? Everyone says 3 years. That tells me how OLD they need to be, not how big. And I know the bigger the better, but as my girls are 3.5 years, I want to know if they are big enough. Being just over 7lbs and over 5ft long, are they big enough?

What size were your females when you first bred them? What size were they when they first had babies? What is your rule of thumb?

Maturity plays a good part, and bigger doesn't always mean better - especially if big = fat and lazy.

I have gone with 4 years and 10+ pounds for the girls. (i.e. my 2006s are in their first breeding season.)

P.S. that's the size my girls were last season, so I'd think they she is right on track for the 2011 - 2012 season.

Bigger doesnt really matter...... it's all about sexual maturity.......    Some smaller insular bci boas breed at 2.5 feet....I have a four foot Suriname that is 7 years old being bred this season..  I would never even attempt to breed a female under 4 years.. but I feel better about 5     its such a big risk....

Well, I'm not personally going to be able to breed them, I don't have big enough cages. I'm selling them because I'm getting out of boas (again with the room), but everyone asks me if they are breedable. Since I've never bred boas, I don't know! I was also thinking they would be ready next season, but wanted some experianced answers!!

My rule of thumb for BCI Boas is 3.5 years and at least 10 - 12 lbs.
