Q:

Hognose off feed
|
|
In Relation To:
Harley
|
|
|
So I am still new to hognoses, but through my research I have read that the males tend to go off feeding for up to a month or so. Harley has desided he wanted to be this way lately, being off of food for about a month now. My question more or less is when should I try to start feeding him again? I have been offering him food once a week but I don't want to be feeding his "leftovers" to my other corn snakes because he's being a pain.

My little hoggie just started eating again after a 3.5 month fast, so I can feel your pain. During the fast, I started out offering food every week, but soon enough that came to every 2-3 weeks, because I got tired of wasting the feeders.
What are your hoggies' temps? Also, I noticed you moved him into a larger enclosure @ the end of November. I think this (combined with the season change) was the reason my hog went off food. I had moved him from a 5.5 gal to a 10 gal, and he immediately stopped eating. Once I moved him back to the 5.5 gal, got his temps managed (hot spot of 90, ambient in the low to mid 80's during the day) and let him settle in for a few weeks, he took his f/t hopper soaked in tuna juice like a champ, and has eaten twice now.
The important thing, if the fast continues, is to monitor his weight. If he doesn't drop much, you don't have anything to worry about. My guy only dropped about 4g during his fast (from 52g to 48g). It's distressing when they're so small and not eating! But, it happens. Good luck!

Like Skelegirl mentioned above, my hoggie (also named Harley! haha) looooooooooves a mouse dipped in tuna juice. If you haven't tried that already, I'd suggest that. I dip the whole mouse in, then put it right up to his snout. He usually opens his mouth right away and down the hatch it goes!

Try chondros. I have a few boys that routinely go 4-6 months without food. I offer food every few weeks, they run from it and the ferrets get a nice mousie snack. Offer food once a week, he'll eat when he's ready. Tis the season for fasting males.

Hogs will fast whenever, regardless of gender. My males and females both do it. Just offer feed as you routinely would and if he doesnt eat, he doesnt eat.
The larger cage prolly isnt helping though.

The first thing to check is the temps. He should have a temp range from 80-90 or even 95. Make sure he has good hiding spots so he will feel secure. Like Ashleigh said....mine love tuna juice. Dip the head in tuna and hold it to his snout. Mine will drink the water off the mouse and then gobble up the mouse. I feed mine usually twice a week (more often if they appear hungry). All that being said, they sometimes just won't eat. Watch his weight and he'll be just fine.

I just offered him a large pinkie after letting him settle for a few days in a small tub. From the minute I moved him from the 10 gallon tank to the 12.7 qt sterlite he seemed to be more active and alert. Thanks for the help
