Q: Idea's for racks
Posted By:

Hey, I'm just trying to figure out the best way to put some racks together.  My husband wants to make some home-made boaphile type racks for our large constrictors, so I was just hoping for some of you guys to help out and share your idea's or personal creations.  Pictures are appreciated.  Anyways, what do you guys reccomened?  Where are good places to look for well priced supplies?  I look forward to seeing what everyone has to offer.

Thanks so much,

Megan

I have a blog that shows a rack that I designed, but it's for the Vision V-70 tubs. It's a lot lighter than melamine and very sturdy.

Build it like a bookcase . the sides like a ladder ( 2x2) and use plywood for the shelves . pre drill the holes for the screws and fasten together. Thats what I do. Then I paint and or stain , urethane and let dry for a few days. I use the sterilite bins to house my snakes in.

we've got a tub system but we wana build something at least 4 feet wide (long) 2 feet deep and 14 inches high...we were debating on a fold down hinge door or sliding doors.  like I said, something for the larger boa's...in excess of 7 feet.

I made cages out of plywood (1/4" for the top/bottom and 3/8 for the sides/front/back), stepped angle connections (for strength and stability), and recessed drop-down plexi doors.  The bigger ones are 6 ft x 2 ft, but I plan to make an 8 ft x 3 ft for my Retic.

Some folks like to use oil-based stains/polyurethane to seal the wood, but I like the water-based.  I think they are just as effective and are way easier/faster to use.  Brass hardware is a good bet, too, as it puts up well with moisture.  Finally, use silicone to seal the seams and dab some urethane over screws to seal the holes.

Now, if I could figure out how to attach a photo ...

Good luck!

You could by some fusion boa tubs and make a rack around that but If that were the case it would be cheaper just to buy a stack of 4x2 cages. There nice looking though
