Q: my new baby ball python isn't eating

Hey iherpers,

I got my first snake about a week ago and thought it was about ready to feed him(or her, don't really know).  I got a live fuzzy from the place i got it and stupidly, put it in the cage.  It was there for about a day and wasn't eaten.  Then i got smart and put it in a seperate, smaller cage and put my python in there and he smelled it and almost touched it but still didn't eat it.  I know that he has to get used to his environment so I'm gonna wait a couple of days, but I was wondering if you guys have any other suggestions.  By the way, the fuzzy is pretty much dead now. lol

Try feeding frozen/thawed and doing the Zombie Mouse dance. If your snake has never eaten live s/he prolly won't, and it can be really dangerous for your snake too!

yea i know to feed it frozen.  im going to order/buy some soon but the first one the store gave me was live.  Im just trying to get him to eat.

Should I keep him in the small cage until he eats or wait a couple days and keeping trying

Miss Andrea

Give him a solid week to settle in and get used to his new enviornment. Don't handle him durring this time as well. Then after at least a week, try offering food again. If he still doesn't take it, don't offer agian for another week. He'll eat when he's hungry.

like miss andrea said, but if that don't work try soaking your frozen/thawed mouse/rats(which ever one you have) in regular chicken broth.

Also check to see that your husbandry is correct, hot spot of 88-90 (belly heat), cool spot around 80. Baby balls are shy (they are food in the wild) and don't like large enclosures, most people keep them in small 6qt shoebox size enclosures. You can try that along with a small hide. Try once a week to feed it, fuzzies and pups are safe because they don't fight back or chew on the snake at night if you leave it in. Once it gets eating, it should be eating hoppers or larger. Also I wouldnt use a seperate enclosure for feeding unless its a strong feeder which at this point its not. Hope this helps.
