Q:

Splitting up adult bp's after them living together for 15 years.
|
|
So I've never been in this position before where I acquire 4 snakes at once and all of them are quite old. The oldest being 20 years old. Ok a lil background here the ages of the (4) bps are as such 20, 15,15, and 12 years old. And it's my understanding they have all been living together this entire time. Should I allow them to continue to live that way, or separate them? None of my other snakes live in the same tubs. My main concern is the 20 yr old.

I'd separate them. Snakes don't get attached to each other, it's impossible for their brains to work that way - so no harm in splitting them up IMO.

+ 1. IMO, "it's always been done like that" is not always good justification to continue a behavior

+100 I think the cons of housing together very much outweight any pros, even if they've been living that way forever. Good luck!

@ doomtrooper, hmm :/, i'm posting this question because I have rather young bp's and didn't know if because of their ages and the time frame of which they have been together would pose a problem. :/

I think she meant that the BPs she has had since before she got these oldies are young, so she didn't know if she should treat this situation differently since the old ones are accustomed to being housed together ;)

They'll probably be relieved when you separate them, lol. "Oh, hey, you mean the basking spot is all MINE now?" It's not what they're used to, but that was messed up when they were moved to a new home anyhow. If you see signs of stress or going off feed, it's far more likely to be related to being moved to a new environment than to losing cage partners. They'll get over it.

Seperate them! Snakes aren't social creatures. You know what is right by reading your post. Just suck it up and get them in their own enclosures. I can't believe the amount of stress those animals lived through. Ridiculous.

That might be overstating it a bit. Being housed with another animal is stressful, and detrimental in the long term, but not having a hide would be more stressful for a ball python, so it's not quite that severe.

Yes, everyone is right. Seperate them. I don't think they have an idea mentally of how old they are, other than sexually mature. I agree that they will be happy to be alone.

I agree with everyone, I'd definitely separate them, no reason to keep them together.
