Leopard gecko quarantine
|
|
My girlfriend has always had a thing for leo's. Weve never had one but every show we go to she's transfixed. So bieng the sweet guy that I am, ive been trying to find one that I feel is suitable for about a week. Well I think I found a nice hypo carrot head (I know super Basic, but I feel it would be a nice first choice.) But before I go to look @ Him/her I wanted to get some opinion's. I have an idea, but what should I be looking for in terms of a healthy specimen? Im assuming that a standard quarntine measure should be implemented. But do geckos carry any ailments that could cause any detrimental effects to my snakes? My chrondo just finished her quarntine yesterday and is loving her new exo. I only ask this because I quartine my snakes in seperate rooms. Would I be able to carry out a quarntine on the gecko in my snake room? (temps are more ideal in there) or should i just put her in my hall with pads like i do the snakes? Any advice @ all would be greatly appreciated.

Your leo should be ok in the snake room, but if you want to be extra safe, you can keep him in a seperate room, the worst i've heard leos carrying is crypto, but you will rarely ever see symptoms for it. a quarentine of 90 days is always the best, any disease that he might have would show up or any parasites. A healthy leo is active and alert, with bright eyes and a nice thick tail, though active for them is usually lounging about lol make sure he's eating regularly and his poo looks like it should, solid with a good bit of urates :) any other questions feel free to ask :)

seconded, look for nice fat (round belly and tail) gecko. i'd get an adult since it'll be your first leo, but thats just me. An adult will be easier to handle, never grab their tails (you may have heard this before, if so im sorry for repeating it :) ) but an adult is also more calm and less jumpy.

I wouldn't reccomend using a hall way as a quarntine area, as you walk past it into other rooms. I would quarntine as you would with any other new snake or new animal. You never know.
Also +1 fat tail. Clear eyes, no mucus in eyes nose or mouth, easy and quiet breathing. Basic syptoms of a healthy animal. You might also want to see it walk to make sure there are no phisological problems or prior injuries. Also check to make sure they can see by waving your hand/fingers by their head. I had an old leo that was going blind and had a hell of a time finding her food and eating it. She ended up living the last few months of her life on wax worms to try to get some weight on her.

Also, it's a good idea to take a close look at their toes. Leos that don't shed properly (usually due to lack of access to a humid hide) can lose their toes when the skin wraps around them and cuts off circulation. Usually this doesn't have any long terms effects, but sometimes they can get infected. So if the gecko is missing any toes make sure you check the stubs carefully.

I would also suggest a seperate room. Can you do the bathroom with a pad? Then you can have an easy place to remember to wash hands.
