Q: Can Ball Pythons have gas?

Ok so here is the deal.. My husband just recently got a ball python from one of the local pet store around here. we have had him now for about three months now and he is very healthy, shed great without any troubles, is a very agressive eater and is very friendly in nature.. Well about a month and a half ago we were laying in bed and heard a really strange noise coming from his tank that sounded almost as though he was farting. When we turned the light on to get a better look into his tank it looked almost as though he was trying to regurgitate his food but nothing came out. After a while he went back to acting like nothing was wrong. Well We thought that maybe it was just some indigestion and that he just needed to fart. Well just tonight he did the same thing and Iwas just wondering if it was something that we should worry about or not? He passes his stools just fine, shed great and is still an agressive eater. My other ball python that I have had for almost 7 years now has never done anything like that to my knowladge ( not saying it couldn't happen in the middle of the night when I am sleep) My question is is can Ball Pythons get gas? He just ate about 2 weeks ago has shed, Had a bowel movement as well as urinated since. We are goin to be setting up appointments for both the snake for check ups as soon as we can find a vet around here that will see them ( we live in a really small town) but was hoping someone might have been through this before and would know what it could possibly be just to hold us over till we get to the vet...Thank you

Breaking Balls

Ball Python farts are totally normal. Strange noises these little guys make sometimes. There are some pretty long threads on BP.net about this "explained" phenomenon :)

all animals can develop gas, but in snakes it isn't very common. Check the temps to make sure they are good and if you can, check to see if there is anything "stuck" in the cloaca - he could be trying to push something out that is stuck (bowel obstruction). Definitely agree a vet trip isn't a bad idea just to make sure (especially since he is new) everything is hunky dory.

Here's an article from Reptile Magazine about it

He may also be stressed out about something.  I went to examine my male lesser after purchasing him at a show and he promptly urinated and shit all over me and the car. He was so stressed out that he did make farting noises.. this is how he was named Capt Howdy (after the demon in The Exorcist). Your little guy isn't abnormal :)

If they are "hurking" I strongly suggest a fecal. Every one I ever had do this came up positive and stopped doing it after proper treatment.

Farts are definitely something ball pythons do. My snakes live in my bedroom, and with 49 snakes I'm bound to hear it every once in a while. It can be loud and horrifying if you don't know what it is... Being woke up by roaring snake farts is scary but oddly funny :)

I have never heard the farting until I rescued my 4 ball pythons that are ages 20 yrs 15 yrs 15 yrs and 12 yrs. OMG the noise is ridiculus you can hear it across the house. Sometimes it's when they are taking a poop, and sometimes well when they aren't. And it is LOUD. When I have company they are like um? When I tell them it's the snakes they look at me like I'm retarded. Enough said they do Fart

Yes, ball pythons can have gas.

However, +1 shellboa. Attempting to regurge on an empty stomach is a major red flag for parasites. A vet checkup will probably be inconclusive, but I would definitely have a fecal test done if I were you.

Ball python gas IS normal.  You may not hear it that often but it is common.  If your ball python had its mouth open when you looked in the enclosure, it may have just been yawning at the time or readjusting its jaw.  If it looked like it was trying to actually regurgitate something back up, I would be a little more worried and monitor its behavior.  I would even rest its stomach for a week to make sure, in case there is tummy upset for whatever reason.  Check its next poo as well.
