Q: Bearded Dragon Pricing
Posted By:

So, just in case you didn't see the other question.  I was given bearded dragon eggs and this is my first experience with bearded dragons aside from the 2 young females I have.  They've all hatched and we're still not sure if they are normals or what, but I'm going to an expo in October to sell them and I don't know what I should price them at.

If anyone has any suggestions I'd really appreciate it!

I had a friend pick up a few normal babies at a local show recently.  He paid between $20-$40 a piece.  Hope this helps.  :)

hypos have clear nails, no black marks and light shoulder pads.

leatherbacks have smoother back scales than standard beardies

trans are nearly see through and usually have black eyes :)

super colorful ones go for 50+ depending on genetics

looks like you might have some reall pretty ones when they get bigger. personally id wait atleast 1-2 months before selling, the babies will be much healthier at that age

Yeah, I'm not selling them until October and they were born August 16th, so they'll be atleast 1.5 months when the expo comes around.  I have uploaded some better pictures of them on my page.  I'm thinking some are normal and some are red phase.  They aren't Chris Allen red, but I think they might still be considered red phase.

From our first year of breeding and selling dragons I can tell you that results will vary.

If you attend a show where well known breeders are established you can expect to get less money when you are first starting out. During our first show we sold some dragons for $100 each (not bad). And, we also sold some dragons almost wholesale at $40 each.

Some may consider us crazy, but sometimes you also need to factor in the cost of care and feeding. We were spending about $400 per month on food at times. Wholesalers will pay $9 to $11 and sell them to pet shops for $20. A quick $200 here and there with ten less mouths to feed can defintiely be a good option.

Generally speaking, you should always be able to get more than Petco or Petsmart for quality animals depending on the competition.

Our third show we were able to get fair pricing that made us happy and also kept us very competitive. We gave a few discounts to parents with kids or teachers seeking classroom pets on a budget, but thats how we roll. At the end of the day the most important thing is your love for the animals and making people happy!

That's really helpful.  I think now that they've gotten a little bigger, I think a couple are straight normals, the rest appear to be light red-phases.  I think I'll price most around $50, and the normals at $30 or $40.  Anything left over I'll sell to the pet store, it's a local pet store (not a chain) and I've worked with them before.  They'll either buy any left over or trade for something they currently have.  I may also post a few online if there are any left, assuming the fedex certification process is finished by then.

Thanks again!
