Boa getting snappy :(

Boa

Ok, i've had my (baby) boa for a while now, maybe 3-4 feeds (one not taken, probably just the fact that he won't take it from me, only if its just set in the cage, and he didn''t find it). and well she's getting extremely snappy. i can't take her out of the cage without her pulling back her head, and then biting for that matter. it started when i was handling her during a shed witch i didn't know she was in, i put her back, left her for a day or so and she shed. then a week after the shed i took her out and sat there at my desk with her, i set her down so she could explore my desk, and she was going a little to far so i started to pick her up and move her, but she attempted to strike, she wouldn't stop, and i didn't want to take a bite from her, even if it did not hurt that much. i took a paper bag, put it in front of her head, she started striking at that instead of my hand that was holding her, so i took her and put her back. then, one other time i took her out and put her on a climbing structure i used to have in my corn snakes cage, i let her crawl on it for a little, then when i went to pick her back up she did the same thing. i really don't want to have a feisty boa, and i know she will probably grow out of it, but is there anything i can do to calm her down know? i am switching her to a plastic tub, (shes currently in a 20 gallon) and i was going to switch her to something a litttle bit smaller, would she be more comfortable in a tub a little smaller than the 20 g or should i go bigger?
oh, and i have on more small question, my BP's lookin a little skinny, would upping the size of the mouse to hoppers be the best way to fatten her up?
thanks!

As far as the BP... most definitely bump up the size. Even a newly hatched BP can handle an adult mouse. I start my hatchlings on hoppers, and fairly quick they get moved to weanling size.
I don't see any public tracking for your Boa... what size and how often are you feeding?

unfortunately, the origanal owner had them all on small mice, and i am going to switch her over to rat pups i think it was as soon as they get here. i feed every week, except once she didn't take it. but the boa didin't seem to be biting out of hunger, it was more like territorial issues or something. i am going to try and handle her again today, holding her a little more away from the head, and see if she calms down.

Boas can be very snappy as babies, it just comes with the species sometimes. I took quite a few bites from my boa before he calmed down, now he's 4 feet long and has come a looong way. Do you have hides in the boas tub? I know people say they don't need them, but my boa uses his hides all the time, and would probably be a jerk if he didn't have hides too. Also, I highly suggest upgrading to a larger size prey for your ball python. At the least it should be on rat fuzzies/pups IMO. Feed every 5 days until you get the bigger prey item. I'd even continue the 5 day feeding schedule until it puts on some weight.

I wouldn't be to worried about your Boa. Most snakes as babies are "snappy" and almost all of them grow out of it. One thing you have to remember is a bite is not the end of the world you need to aproach your boa with this attidude. I find if I go in with the attitude of i'm going to get bit I get bit if I go in with the attitude of i'm the boss very rarely does anything go unaccordingly to plan. There is a method I have used with very snappy snakes that in my opinion seemed to work. Get a snake bag or a nice cloth bag and place your boa in the bag. Then handle the snake in the bag. They wont strike at you well in the bag so you lose the chance of getting bit. Do this for maybe 10 or 15 minutes a night except close to or after feeding and you just might see results. As for the ball python yes you could up the size of your mouse or just feed 2 of them instead of one. I will often feed multiple smaller rats instead of one large rat for the simple fact of there is more surface area well digesting in the stomach. If you have to small rats or mice that are the same size as one large one it doesn't matter which the snake eats its still getting the amount it needs so you could up the size or just up the amount.

Thanks to both of you! i haven't switched the boa over to a tub yet, or any of my animals for that matter, but she currently has a hide, and always will, except that she doesn't actually hide in it, she burrows, witch is strange. sometimes i'll start to handle her, and when she starts biting i'll set her back, and she goes into the hide, but she must burrow in the hide right after going in, because once i lifted it back up and she wasn't there.
i ordered maybe 50 hopppers for the ball python, the minimum, so i will probably feed double until they run out, and then order whatever she's feeding on then. again thanks for the help!
