Q: Can you ID this ball python Morph?

In Relation To:

Angelo [RS09a01]

We were given this sub-adult ball python a few months ago as both a gift, and a rescue. When we got him he was pretty underweight, but after a few solid meals, he's looking a lot more healthy.  Because of the way he came to us, we have nothing by way of records on him.  We don't know what his parents were, we don't know who his previous owner was, we don't know who produced him.  We have nothing to go on but his appearance.

We've asked around a bit, and we have gotten a number of different opinions.  So I'm putting it to all of you.  What morph is Angelo?  I'm attaching a picture of him and 2 other morphs.

Balled up on the left:  Normal
Balled up on the right:  Pastel
Stretched out and cralling between them:  Angelo - Mystery Morph?

Any ideas?

He looks like a light normal to me.

I have a nice male that looks almost Identical to your python. He was my very first python and started my addiction with reptiles and he is just a very nice normal. It looks like that is what you've got on your hands however it does have similarities to a ghost. Could also be het for just about anything. Really the only way to find out for sure is to breed him. Either way nice snake.

I'm also going with orange ghost. The perfectly clear belly is really nice, and the third picture under his animal profile makes me think OG. Good luck, get a het female and try to prove him out :)

+1 to Orange Ghost. A good way to tell is to look at his shed, if it is clear with no pattern he is definitely a Ghost. But from all of the pics, that is my bet. Here is a pic of one:

I agree Abi!  We, (and most others who've ventured a guess) are really leaning toward ghost being the right answer.  But there's also reasonable speculation that he may be a fire, or a vanilla.  There are photos out there of both of those morphs that come pretty close to his looks too.  He broke 600 grams this summer, so we're going to try to pair him up with a normal female.  If she throws all normal looking babies, we'll be buying a female het ghost to pair him with next season to try and prove him (and his first clutch as hets) for sure.  =)

Here is the ultimate test- what does his SHED look like? If it is completely clear, it is a ghost. If there is any markings/pattern/etc, then it isn't a ghost. Looking at the pics, definitely am going w/ the majority on this say it appears to be an orange ghost.

on that note- if you are looking for a het ghost female that's going to be ready to go- let me know. I've got a few that I'm looking to part with :)

Miss Andrea

After looking at the pics and giving it some though, I agree with the ghost. Fire and Vanilla don't fit.

Browncoat, I have noticed the female het ghost you've got listed here on the classifieds, and when I saw it, I immediately thought of my boy Angelo.  But then I saw the $900 price tag you expect to get for her and I quickly lost interest.  I know a couple big breeders are selling 2010 het ghost females for $200, and while adults are obviously worth more than yearlings, they're not worth 4 to 5 times more.  Thanks though.  =)

I am going to lean towards normal...a very spectacular normal but normal all the same. I have one very very similar, slightly less blushing along the back but alike in every thing else. I will load a pic of him to my profile tomorrow. I know OG are not real expensive but for one to be given away...not real likely. I have seen more and more unusual markings, patterns and some real unusual combinations of both in the last couple years but they are all normal.  I have been making jokes with fellow breeders lately about how we could start a new line and call them "het for awesome"

Shellboa, don't let the likelihood of a morph being given away weigh into your opinion.  The circumstances surrounding Angelo coming to us are quite unusual, and allow for just such a thing to happen.  Basically, the owner of a local exotic pet store died unexpectedly and all the store's assets were sold off in a liquidation sale - proceeds to benefit the owner's daughter.  We didn't know the owner, but we shared a mutual friend.  This friend used the fact that they were trying to sell everything ASAP, along with the rough condition that the snake was in to get him for pennies on the dollar, and then give him to us as a gift.  The store owner was known to take animals in on trade, which is how we believe Angelo came to him...which is why his origins are unknown.

There is too much blushing on his head to be a normal I think.
