Savannah Monitor Food/Feeding
|
|
In Relation To:

I just got a baby Savannah Monitor and I was wondering about a few things as far as feeding goes. There seem to be a lot of opinions and no real facts. I know while that young insects should be the main part of their diet and they should eat 2-3X/day. My question is can I use a lizard food (ie bearded dragon diet, Flukers Buffet Blend) to feed when I'm working all day? It has nuggets and freeze dried bugs. He always has clean water readily available and I moisten the nuggets with a spray on vitamin. Any feedback would be appreciated.

I personally would avoid other types of lizard prepared foods. Bearded dragons are omnivores and Savannah monitors are carnivores. The prepared foods will likely have vegetable matter in it that would be hard for your monitor to digest. It is better to feed them live insects (roaches, crickets, superworms, mealworms). You can give them mice but only two times a week unless you need them to gain weight then you can temporarily give them more often. Also, you can feed them low fat ground turkey with reptile vitamins mixed in.
Also, make sure you have a hot spot of 130 F. They like it hot. And UVA and UVB light.

...and something else- fresh bugs will always be more nutritious then dried ones. In the process of drying them (even freeze drying), some of the nutrients, vitamins and minerals break down. Also the spray on vitamin makes me nervous. They need a lot of calcium for their growing bones so they don't get metabolic bone disease. Spray on vitamins is a little harder to tell how much they are getting. I would recommend using the powdered Rep-cal Calcium and Rep-cal's Herptivite multivitamin.

I use a modified version where I use Rep-cal calcium and Rep-cal herptivite vitamins mixed with the ground turkey. My Savannah seems to like it.
I should try the recipe on the site, only I would half the recipe or 1/4 it since I have only one small savannah. If anyone is interested in trying this I found a place to buy steamed bone meal: http://www.entirelypets.com/nastbomepo2pck.html We could split the cost and the bottles up. Send me a message if anyone would like to do this.

I have not used it myself, but the Monitor guru in the PNW (RIP, Shari!) swore by it, and had many healthy monitors over the years with that system
