Q: Lone Crested Gecko laying Eggs

Hey guys!

Recently bought a retired breeder from a reptile show here in town and I'm just getting into working with geckos. I've had her since about september and she's laid one egg a month since I brought her home. Is this normal? We candled the first one but there seemed to be nothing there and the second one, when I found it, was a couple days gone and dehydrated and didn't seem viable.

Are cresties known for storing sperm, should I be more concerned about these eggs?

Thanks in advance!

Some single females do lay eggs without males. Chickens are a good example. Our cresties will lay eggs with or without males, and likewise with the leos. They don't seem to need a male to produce the eggs. Not sure how long they CAN store sperm, but I can tell you that none of my females eggs have been viable since her male companion escaped. So it seems to be less than the two or three months she goes between laying. If you're concerned, just freeze the eggs for a day or two and then toss them. That will destroy them if they are fertile.

cresteds can and do lay eggs even if they are virgins and have never been with a male.  They can store sperm but i have no idea how long i think it varies on the female.

Female Cresties have been known to store sperm for over a year, but if the first egg was a dud most likely the rest are as well.
