Getting FedEx certified!
|
|
Okay, so I sent out my test package today to start the process of becoming FedEx certified to ship reptiles. Oh, it was a headache from the get go. But I finally sent the test package off today 10-31-2011 and hope to hear from them in about a week or less.
My question is that I didn't include a business name on the Test package application form and was wondering if that is a for sure test failure outcome since I did not put anything down for that? Since I do not run a business and from what I understand they do not include home businesses as a business I just left it blank. I am hoping that will not determine weather or not the package will pass or not? Everything else from my understanding today went as it should. I'm just worried about that small detail.
Any suggestions on what I might put on it , next time if this one does come back with failed results?
Thanks,
Anjeanette Porter

I remember when I got certified with FedEx they wanted my business name, and I remember the process was very hassle free. The lack of a business name could be why it was a headache for you, and still may be a problem for you in the future. I don't know that it will cause any problems with the test package though.
My suggestion, check out your state laws and get a business name. Unless you are planning to keep, and not sell, what you produce, you are operating a business.

I got certified a couple months back and I remember just being very impatient. Not that they were slow, but after they passed me and I signed the waiver it took an extra 2 weeks to get them to say it was offical. Even though you don't have a business I would just make it your name or something like that.
I put my business name and didn't have an issue, but I'd contact them and make sure it's not an issue, you can call the testing place directly. I wish I still had their number, but if you call fedex they can give it to you.
I agree with bsharrah, it's not hard to get a business name registered, my business name is registered in the state of MD and it's $25 every 5 years. I'd recommend at least just making it your name or initals or something.

What kind of business is it that you have? A sole priorpritership? A partnership, a LLC., a Coporation? Sorry for bad spelling. I was wondering what kind to get registered with. I know the sole priorprietership is the easiest.

I have a sole proprietorship, it is easier, but I don't need anything more. I would look on your state's website for information about their rules, or call them and see what they recommend.

I didn't list a business name when I sent in my application & test package, & I didn't have any problems. I have heard of people not passing if they forget to tape the deli cup, or do the "H" tape on the outside of the test pacakge.

I taped the container really well and I think I know what you mean by H taping on the box, where you go down both short sides of the box and along the long middle part right? I sealed it pretty well. I have a tracking number and just checke it a few minutes ago and it's already in Memphis,TN at the local fedex facility so that is quick. I hope I can get results really quick too.

You should not have to need a business name to ship something. Unless you have the appropriate liscense you can not classify your home or apartment as a business address.
If you use your given name as part of your business name or DBA, then you will save some money on trademarking a new name. In my 20+ years of experience as a Creative designer, a sole propriety business will EAT YOU ALIVE with self-eployment taxes. We found a better CPA and upgraded to an LLC during 2006 and it has been very rewarding. The only downside is the tax prep cost may be more expensive if you outsource this service, however you should defintiely see more savings by giving yourself a reduced salary.
Good luck with your FedEx certification! :-)

Thanks! I hope it goes smoothly for me. I wrote David Nelson an email back saying that I didn't have a business but to just use my full name as a business name DBA. So hope that works. Not sure though. Getting ready to check my email.
