Ball off feed
|
|
I know it's common for adult ball pythons to go off food, especially during breeding season...I just want to make sure this is about the right time when they do. This is the first year I have "adults" and all my males over 800 grams except one keeps refusing except for maybe once a month. They don't seem to be losing too much weight, and they are in the same rack system as my immature females, is this why? One has always been a semi picky eater, but now he's just flat out refusing. And it seems they all refused at the same timing, is it due to "breeding season" even though they aren't breeding this year?

Nope this is the time of the year when they start being major PIA's. Chances are, your boys are ready and rearing to go for some females. My males start refusing normally in October and really pick up end of November/December, depending on what type of breeding cycle I have them going through. If they are not breeding this year, no worries. I would try to feed once every two weeks- if they seem hungry, try again. No sense in wasting a good frozen dinner if they are not though. :)

I think it really depends, all of my Balls are completely ravenous all times of the year - well, the only ones that aren't are big girls who have ovulated. My males continue to destroy food throughout the breeding season, but I know this is not the norm. I wouldn't be concerned at all, it's getting colder and it is more typical for them to take a break. They won't lose much if any weight at all as long as they don't overbreed themselves :) I'm with Amanda, I'd just offer once every 2 weeks, the bi-weekly schedule may give you better luck than trying every week.

I wouldn't worry I have a mix of the above. My one female breeding this season has never said no to food is off feed. So is her favourite bf... well the only one she seems to lock with and they cuddle after wards.. usually she sends the boy in the cold corner haha. The male she is locking with most is also off feed but always curious when I feed. My other males are pretty much pigs except for one and he definitely wants himself a girl. I have a 900g 2010 male right next to my breeding female... food is delicious he says. Like people have been saying silly balls. To each their own. Keep track of his weight and offer something tasty every couple of weeks or when you plan to feed someone else of same size. If he takes it other snake waits a day if he doesn't snake eats on time. Thats the way I do it so I don't have to throw out rats if I can help it.

I've kept many ball pythons, and this seems pretty usual. I had a nice pair of pastels, and each year around this time the male would constantly go off feed. As mentioned above, just monitor your weights and make sure temps and everything are correct. When they started with this, I used to offer food a little less often, like every 10 days instead of 7.
